FIFA Chooses Host Cities for Football World Cup

FIFA president Sepp Blatter

FIFA president Sepp Blatter

FIFA on Saturday announced its choices of 11 Russian cities to host the soccer World Cup in 2018, sidelining bids from Yaroslavl and Krasnodar.

Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kazan, Sochi, Yekaterinburg, Samara, Saransk, Rostov-on-Don, Nizhny Novgorod, Volgograd and Kaliningrad will stage the tournament.

Matches in Moscow will take place at two stadiums.

The announcements came as part of a ceremony at a Channel One studio, attended by FIFA president Sepp Blatter and Sports Minister Vitaly Mutko. The channel broadcast the event live, offering video linkups with each of the winning cities, except Moscow.

The decision means that the chosen cities will have to provide top-quality stadiums, hotels and transportation services, which will drive billions of dollars of investment.

?It's the first time the World Cup is to take place in Eastern Europe,? Blatter said in opening remarks.

FIFA secretary-general Jerome Valcke said the size of the city was not a criterion for selection but that the legacy the tournament would leave was considered important.

This past summer, Yaroslavl became the largest city where an opposition candidate won mayoral elections ? a slap in the face for the ruling United Russia party, which normally tightly controls the political scene in the country.

Blatter opened the envelopes with the names of the first two winning cities. As St. Petersburg was announced cameras showed fireworks immediately shooting into the night sky. Yekaterinburg was second.

The show's host, Andrei Malakhov, then paused the announcements to show footage of his meeting with ?the man who made all this possible,? President Vladimir Putin, which took place at Putin's suburban residence of Novo-Ogaryovo at 7 p.m. that day.

Putin sounded casual when he greeted Malakhov, saying, ?You are here about soccer.?

The president said the championship would be a good reason for the country's youth to take an interest in sports and would help pull some of them away from alcohol and cigarettes.

He also said the preparations would give a powerful impetus to the economy and create new jobs.

Putin said Russia insisted on having 11 host cities but that the final decision rested with FIFA. Contrary to news reports that said Putin would have the final say over which cities were selected, Putin said he was unaware of the choices.

The government will aim to place some auxiliary sports facilities, such as training bases, in the cities that FIFA excluded, he said. The government will also subsidize fares for residents of those cities to travel to matches, he said.

FIFA secretary-general Jerome Valcke and Alexei Sorokin, chief of the local organizing committee, came on stage next to announce the cities of Sochi and Kazan.

Brazilian player Roberto Carlos was the next to open envelopes. Two twin brothers, who acted in Russia's promotional film for the World Cup bid, stood by to pull out the paper strips with city names: Nizhny Novgorod, Samara and Rostov-on-Don.

The Russian national soccer team's new coach Fabio Capello and the two boys next announced Kaliningrad, Volgograd and Saransk ? the smallest of all the host cities, with a population of 300,000.

Fielding a question, Mutko unveiled, perhaps inadvertently, that the remaining winning city was Moscow.

Nevertheless, Blatter returned to the stage, accompanied by Mutko, to open an envelope with Moscow's name inside.

Governors of most regions were present for the video linkups with Channel One, except for the governors of St. Petersburg and Krasnodar, the region that includes Sochi.

Russia beat England and joint bids from Spain-Portugal and Belgium-Netherlands in December 2010 for the right to hold the tournament.

Wall St marks best third quarter since 2010

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Wall Street closed its best third quarter since 2010 after a wave of central bank actions sparked a dramatic reversal in equity markets, but signs of weakness in the economy drove stocks lower on Friday.

The S&P 500 climbed 5.9 percent over the past three months as central banks geared up to boost liquidity to markets and kick-start their flagging economies. The move has lifted the benchmark index as much as 17 percent this year, recently pushing the S&P to its best level in five years.

But on Friday, investors grappled with more disappointing U.S. economic data as business activity in the U.S. Midwest contracted for the first time since 2009. The news came on the heels of other weak regional manufacturing reports and a sharp drop in U.S. durable goods orders last month.

"The reality is that the fundamentals of the market certainly don't support a 17-plus-percent run-up year to date, but with all the QE (quantitative easing) action, that has had a huge, huge impact," said Oliver Pursche, president of Gary Goldberg Financial Services in Suffern, New York.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 48.84 points, or 0.36 percent, to close at 13,437.13. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index lost 6.48 points, or 0.45 percent, to finish at 1,440.67. The Nasdaq Composite Index dropped 20.37 points, or 0.65 percent, to close at 3,116.23.

For the third quarter, the Dow rose 4.3 percent and the Nasdaq climbed 6.2 percent.

For the month of September alone, the Dow gained 2.6 percent and the S&P 500 rose 2.4 percent, while the Nasdaq advanced 1.6 percent.

In contrast, the trend for the week was down, with the Dow off 1.1 percent, while the S&P 500 shed 1.3 percent and the Nasdaq dropped 2 percent.

In Friday's session, stocks came off their lows after Spanish bank stress tests were released, and were mostly within expectations. The independent audit showed banks will need 59.3 billion euros in extra capital to ride out a serious downturn.

But Spain still remains mired in difficulties. Moody's review of the country's credit rating, due later in the day, could add to its challenges. On Thursday, ratings agency Egan-Jones cut Spain's sovereign rating further into junk status, citing the country's faltering banks and struggling regional governments.

The euro fell against the dollar on Friday, declining for a second straight week, as uncertainty persisted about Spain's prospects for receiving a bailout to prop up its ailing banks.

Recent protests in Spain and Greece against austerity plans have also heightened investors' concerns as the turmoil could impede political maneuvering.

On the earnings front, U.S.-listed shares of Research in Motion jumped 5 percent to $7.50 a day after a smaller-than-expected quarterly loss.

Pledges by the European Central Bank, the Federal Reserve and the Bank of Japan to buy government bonds helped cement a summer rally in stocks and commodities.

But markets have lost some of their luster after the announcements from the central banks in the first half of September. After pulling back 1.7 percent over the last two weeks, the S&P 500 is now up 14.6 percent so far this year. The S&P 500's drop of 1.3 percent this week is its worst weekly decline since the start of June.

The coming months hold a series of difficult challenges for markets, including third-quarter earnings season, which is expected to show the first drop in earnings since 2009, and the U.S. presidential election in November.

Reflecting Friday's defensive tone, nine of the 10 S&P sectors fell. Only the S&P utilities index was positive, up just 0.5 percent.

The decline in the S&P technology sector index <.gspt> was limited, as Accenture PLC climbed 7.1 percent to $70.03. Accenture's gain followed its forecast of full-year earnings higher than analysts' estimates as the company bolsters its outsourcing business.

Nike Inc warned of slowing orders in China, becoming the latest company to sound a note of caution about how economic weakness in the world's second-largest economy was affecting its business. Nike's stock fell 1.1 percent to $94.91.

Trading was light on the quarter's last day, when money managers reposition their portfolios. About 6.15 billion shares changed hands on the New York Stock Exchange, Amex and Nasdaq, compared with the average daily volume of 6.38 billion.

Decliners outnumbered advancers on the NYSE by a ratio of 3 to 2, while on the Nasdaq, nearly two stocks fell for every one that rose.

Photo - Disco Pigs

Written in an almost incomprehensible vernacular, Disco Pigs, the Week 1 ADC Lateshow poses an interesting puzzle to performers. We catch up with the team to hear their thoughts on this strange and extraordinary script...

In Enda Walsh's rite of passage drama, a train is a choo choo, a cow is a moo moo and a pocket is a plopet. Maria Pawlikowska, playing one half of this two-hander opposite George Johnston for the ADC Week 1 Lateshow, said "I'd never read anything like it before - the fact that it's written in thick, heavy dialect, firstly, which can completely throw the reader off, but the teen frustration and disillusionment [that the play deals with] is pretty universal and easy for most of us to identify with, and Pig and Runt have that kind of absurd humour and wit that accompanies that sense of disenchantment."

The strange patios in which the play is written is part phonetic Cork accent, part personal in-jokes and slang between the two central figures, and forms both a barrier and a gateway to the audience's understanding. Director Charlie Risius told us "You could definitely say Pig and Runt have erected a linguistic barrier between themselves and the rest of the world. Runt tells us that when they were growing up they simply refused to talk to any human beings other than each other. In the play we only really see them talk to others to insult or threaten them. But equally, between Pig and Runt the language is the opposite of a barrier, it is a conduit for their interactions, a vehicle of intimacy and mutual understanding, and the fantastic thing is that because the play is told from Pig and Runt's perspective, the audience (and the actors) are brought inside the barrier. Spectators are drawn into Pig and Runt's world and so, once they get accustomed to the language and the Cork accent (in the same way it takes five or ten minutes to attune to the verse when you're watching Shakespeare), I think that the patois will actually be anything but a barrier; it will hopefully bring the audience closer to Pig and Runt and help them to understand them - it certainly has had this effect for us in rehearsal."

Rehearsals sound hard work, though. Johnston reflected "The first challenge was working out exactly what Walsh means with certain words which he has written, i.e. 'fox' which is Walsh's approximation of a Cork pronunciation of the English word 'folks'; similarly 'tear' actually means 'here'. A lot of this is 'bedroom-work' but some of it is really quite ambiguous so we go through it in the rehearsal room with Charlie before we put a scene on its feet so everyone knows exactly what everyone else is saying! The other important piece of pre-rehearsal work to do is work out exactly what any references in the script are referring to; for instance Sonia O'Sullivan, who won gold in the 1995 World Athletics Championships is referenced repeatedly so it's important that we know exactly who she is so we can understand exactly what this reference means." Pawlikowska added "The play is going to be one of the hardest I've done, I think - not just because of the language barrier, the Cork dialect combined with Pig and Runt's own bizarre vocabulary - but the sheer physical exertion of it all! There's a lot of fighting, role-playing and the intensity of both characters really requires total commitment to every tiny gesture. I think the fact that the play is written in such a particularly unusual way meant Runt's voice was actually easy enough for me to find - Enda Walsh is a linguistic genius in that sense. The rhythm, for one, constantly gives me momentum, a direction, verbal (and physical) mannerisms to work with. I love how the musicality of the play is relentlessly contrasted with all the brilliantly vulgar things that Pig and Runt say and do."

It becomes clear that the linguistics of the play have a real effect on creating the production. Risius discussed its effect on their thinking process. "The extremity of the play's patois has certainly made all of us think very hard about the language and how to communicate everything we want to get across to the audience. In many ways it's been very beneficial, I think - having to rethink your assumptions and your usual methods makes you reassess things that normally you take for granted, and that has led to some interesting and fresh ideas. You have to strike a balance between naturalism and catering to the requirements of the audience - for example, people in Cork actually speak incredibly fast but obviously that wouldn't work on stage because the audience wouldn't have a clue what was going on. We've been working on getting the cast to savour each word and to roll it around their mouths, to really think about the physical process of making the sounds. This not only makes sure the words are clearly enunciated so that they'll be comprehensible, but we've found that it gives the words a lot of weight and body, which is very dynamic, so that when, for example, Pig describes how his mother in labour 'heave an rip all insie' it becomes almost onomatopoeic, and very visceral and vivid." It's a bold choice for these student thespians, but it sounds to us like they know what they're doing.

B2B Social Networking | What's In a Name? | Business 2 Community

I frequently find myself thinking that the dumbest thing we Internet marketers ever did in social networking was to rename it social media. In the early days of Web 2.0, there was no such thing as social media. Everyone was just working to make software more social, whatever that meant. Then for a while, the terms ?social networking? and ?social media? were used almost interchangeably. Today, it?s all social media, the Web 2.0 heir apparent of Web 1.0 new media. Social networking is largely reserved for describing the purest of social networks like Faceook and LinkedIn, or the more technical discussions about social graphs and the like. Personally, I strongly prefer the term ?B2B social networking?; because once you recognize that the smart way to use B2B social media is to drive B2B social networking, your fundamental understanding of the potential opportunity shifts. Just for fun, I did a quick Google trend analysis on the terms to visualize the issue.

social media - social networking - trend

As it has grown in popularity, the term ?social media?
has clouded our thinking about social networking with advertising concepts.

So, what?s the big deal Joel? After all, it?s just a kind of new media, only social, right? The problem is that the term ?social media? clouds our thinking about social networking with advertising concepts. In particular, when it comes to B2B social networking, the term ?B2B social media? misses the mark entirely. It makes me cringe when I hear statements from B2B marketers and salespeople such as these:

 • ?Social media is more relevant to B2C than B2B.?
 • ?B2B customers aren?t on Twitter, so we don?t see the relevance of B2B social media.?
 • ?I started a blog, but no one followed it and I really didn?t have the time to keep it up.?
 • ?LinkedIn is full of unemployed job seekers, not business buyers.?

B2B social networking is not the descendant of new media, like a banner ad, only social. B2B social networking is the new technological enabler of face-to-face meetings, industry events, phone calls, email, sales calls, field marketing and public relations, because it?s the networking, not the media that counts! Would you ever expect a B2B marketer or salesperson to make statements such as these?

 • ?Networking is more relevant to B2C than B2B.?
 • ?B2B customers don?t network, so we don?t see the relevance of networking.?
 • ?I started building my network, but no one would meet and I really didn?t have time.?
 • ?My network is full of unemployed job seekers, not business buyers.?

Cast in this light, these statements are obviously and completely ridiculous. The fundamental purpose of B2B social networking technology is to facilitate B2B networking through automation. In plain English, the purpose of B2B social networking is to increase the frequency, velocity, and quality of business referrals and references. When applied to sales and marketing, this translates into accelerating the B2B purchase process and driving viral revenue growth within an industry. At the core of a referral are two things: a positive, trusted relationship and useful information. Now that sounds just a little bit like sharing a blog post or a comment on LinkedIn. At a minimum, B2B sales and marketing professionals should be using B2B social networking to increase the frequency and velocity of referrals throughout the sales process. At a maximum, B2B social networking can be combined with search, Website marketing and marketing automation to completely automate the B2B purchase process of the new breed of B2B buyer.

b2b social networking

Business referrals are the mature B2B cousin of B2C word of mouth marketing. Much of what I propose here in regard to B2B social networking also applies to B2C social networking with the one caveat that B2B social networkers are there to do business, whereas consumers use social networks for personal reasons, so B2C brands must tread carefully on their social turf. In the case of B2C, the term ?social media? may serve as a useful reminder to B2C marketers that consumers on social networks are not there in the service of their brands. On the contrary, B2B marketers should find B2B social networking more relevant and more straightforward than B2C, provided they view it as networking and not advertising.

I also did an experimental search on Google for the term ?B2B social networking? and Google decided what I really meant was ?B2B social media.? It?s really incredible how Google handles synonyms. Thanks for nothing Google!

social media - social networking - search

Even Google treats B2B social networking and B2C social media as synonyms

The is the first post in a series designed to help B2B marketers create better B2B social strategies by thinking in terms of ?networking? over ?media.? Future posts will tackle the following increasingly complex B2B social networking challenges.

 • Professional networking with B2B social media
 • Social Networking for B2B Sales Enablement
 • Leveraging Social Media for B2B Demand Generation
 • Social Networking for B2B Public Relations

So, stay tuned for more!

Tools to Help Kids Express Emotions | Apartment Therapy

Expressing emotions is already hard as an adult, I can't imagine (or don't remember) how hard it must be as a child. In that spirit, I'm trying to help my kids express and accept whatever emotions come up, especially when it comes to negative emotions such as anger and sadness.

The truth is, it's really hard to explain the notion of emotion to a child. Much less ask them to tell you which one they feel. However hard it is, though, research shows self-compassion is of utmost importance, beyond even self-esteem.

There are a few different options out there that can help, mostly games, but also books, apps, and dolls.

? Robot emotions flashcards at Mr. Printable.
? The emotional animals dice game, an active game for younger ones.
? The chill & spill journal, more of a pre-teen and teen item.
? A coloring/make your own story book.
? The emotion matching game, a how-to make your own photo to word matching game.
? Today, I feel silly, a book by Jamie Lee Curtis.
? Touch and learn emotions, a mobile app.
? Emotions memory, a French and English bilingual game.
? Funny families, another bilingual (French/English) card game based on the seven families game.
? Kimochi dolls.

Warning signs seen before actor's violent end

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Probation officials openly worried about actor Johnny Lewis' mental health and his danger to others in recent months, and this week their worst fears came true.

The man who died a violent death on "Sons of Anarchy" three years ago apparently beat and strangled his landlady and attacked neighbors before falling or leaping to his own death in neighborhood near Hollywood on Wednesday afternoon.

They were the final violent acts of a man who in the previous 10 months had been repeatedly arrested, sent to counseling and had left jail only five days before his demise.

Court records and his attorney detailed attempts to help Lewis but not in time to help 81-year-old Catherine Davis, who neighbors reported screaming inside a home near the outskirts of Los Angeles' Griffith Park. The home had been ransacked, glass was shattered and a dead cat was also found inside, and Lewis' body was found in the driveway.

Lewis' cause of death is pending toxicology results, Coroner's investigative division Lt. Fred Corral said Thursday evening. Davis died from blunt head trauma and manual strangulation, he said.

The deaths came four months after a probation officer expressed grave concerns about Lewis' mental health, writing that he was "very concerned for the well-being of not only the community but that of the defendant."

Court records detail Lewis' descent from January 2012, when he attacked two men and hit them in the head with a bottle, through August, when he acted as his own attorney and pleaded no contest to felony assault.

By that point he had been arrested three times for incidents ranging from trying to break into an occupied home in Santa Monica, Calif., to resisting arrest. He had been sent to treatment programs that specialized in drug and alcohol addiction as well as mental illness.

A May 17 probation report states that "the defendant suffers from some form of chemical dependency, mental health issue and a lack of permanent housing. Given this, (Lewis) will continue to be a threat to any community he may reside."

Another probation officer had written two months earlier, "Obviously defendant's behavior is out of control and needs counseling afforded by a professional."

Lewis remained on supervised probation at the time of his death.

Lewis' attorney Jonathan Mandel said the actor had serious mental issues that seemed to surface fairly recently. He said Lewis' parents and others had tried desperately to help him.

"Johnny Lewis had a lot of problems, a lot of mental problems," Mandel said by phone Thursday. "I recommended treatment for him but he declined it."

He continued, saying: "I give a lot of credit to his parents. They were really strong in trying to help him out. They really went to bat for him, but I guess they just couldn't do enough."

Lewis' career spanned more than a decade, mainly in small roles. He played Ricky in the 2007 movie "AVPR: Aliens vs Predator ? Requiem" and was Dennis "Chili" Childress for two seasons on TV's "The O.C." He also appeared in episodes of such popular television shows as "Boston Public," ''Judging Amy," ''Malcolm in the Middle" and "Drake & Josh."

He was on "Sons of Anarchy" in 2008 and 2009 before his character was killed off.

Kurt Sutter, the show's creator and executive producer, tweeted news of Lewis' death Thursday:

"It was a tragic end for an extremely talented guy, who unfortunately had lost his way," Sutter wrote. "I wish I could say that I was shocked by the events last night, but I was not. I am deeply sorry that an innocent life had to be thrown into his destructive path."

Campbell shutters its oldest soup plant

Rich Pedroncelli / AP

This Thursday, Sept. 27, 2012, photo, shows a Campbell Soup Co. factory in Sacramento, Calif. Amid declining demand for canned soups, the world's largest soup maker said it will close the Sacramento plant, built in 1947, that has about 700 full-time workers.

Campbell Soup Co. is closing two U.S. plants and cutting more than 700 jobs as it looks to trim costs amid declining consumption of its canned soups.

The world's largest soup maker said Thursday that it will close a plant in Sacramento, Calif., that has about 700 full-time workers. The plant, which makes soups, sauces and beverages, was built in 1947 and is the company's oldest in the country. That also means it has the highest production costs of Campbell's four U.S. soup plants.

Campbell also plans to shutter a spice plant in South Plainfield, N.J., that has 27 employees. Production will be shifted to the company's other spice plant in Milwaukee.

Employees at the two closing plants were notified that there would be a meeting at 6 a.m. local time Thursday; about 400 workers showed up in California, where they were told of the closure.

"It's always difficult, even when there's a business case that is compelling," said Anthony Sanzio, a Campbell spokesman. "You're dealing with people, and this is going to impact 700 employees who've worked together closely for many years."

CEO Denise Morrison, who was been on the job for about a year, was not present at the meeting.

The announcement comes as Campbell looks to freshen up its image with dozens of new soup flavors and sauces intended to lure younger consumers. Many of the new products come in pouches designed to convey a fresher feel, rather than the iconic steel cans that have long defined the company.

Those new pouches are manufactured with another party and are not made at Campbell's soup plants.

Although Campbell makes other products such Pepperidge Farm baked goods and V8 vegetable juices, soups account for half its revenue. And the Camden, N.J.-based company has struggled to fix the soup unit amid evolving consumer tastes.

Over the past decade, overall canned soup consumption is down 13 percent, according to the research firm Euromonitor International, as fresh soups have become more widely available at supermarkets and restaurants. Campbell's share of the market has also declined to 53 percent, down from 67 percent a decade earlier.

To expand into products with more growth potential, Campbell this summer purchased Bolthouse Farms in a $1.55 billion cash deal. The company says the move will help it stake a claim in the fresh packaged food category, which is growing at a faster clip than the broader packaged food market.

Campbell Soup Co. currently has about 19,900 employees globally. The company said the California plant is expected to close by July 2013 and the New Jersey plant by March 2013.

The company expects the closings to result in about $115 million in pre-tax costs. Its actions will also require approximately $27 million in capital spending.

Annual savings are predicted to be about $30 million starting in fiscal 2016.

News-and-Society: Why Green Events Are Increasingly Becoming ...

Nowadays, with sustainability dominating the charts across majority global issues, an increasing number of event organizers are planning to go green with the events that they are organizing. This helps them to move up a step ahead in the path to reduce environmental burdens. The motive behind green events is to eliminate the negative impact on the environment. Usage of energy efficient materials, proper treatment of food wastage, usage of recyclable materials, etc. are some of the elements that need to be taken care of whilst organizing a green event.

Though events bring together thousands of people and contribute to the local economy but environmentally and socially it leads to creation of tons of waste, use of exorbitant amounts of electricity and increase in carbon monoxide emissions. As per reports put forward by the United Nations World Tourism Organization, tourism's contribution to climate change accounts for approximately 5% of all carbon monoxide emissions. Organizers must therefore strategize on serious efforts to reduce carbon emissions and play a part to a greener and better environment.

Let me now outline some of the benefits of organizing green events that are increasingly making it the preferred choice amongst modern day event organizers.

Contributes To Environmental Protection:

Green events can contribute greatly towards overall environmental protection. By incorporating and implementing sustainable practices while event planning like choosing an energy efficient venue, ensuring composting of food waste, usage of recyclable materials can greatly ensure preservation of the planet.

Improves Company's CSR Responsibility:

Going green largely reflects the organization's commitment towards ensuring a sustainable environment. In a company's Corporate Social Responsibility lies its duty to ensure welfare of the host community and the environment as a whole via basic elements of event planning, implementation and its evaluation. Going green add to the element of welfare for both, thereby enhancing the company's CSR.

Cost Effective:

Green events are quite cost effective since the bulk of the necessary equipments used are either biodegradable or can be re-used for future use. This allows companies to reduce waste and cut costs thus allowing organizers to gain a significant competitive advantage.

Increase Awareness amongst Participants

These sustainable events can pave the way by example a brilliant stage and great means to spread the message of reducing environmental burdens amongst the attending participants and staff. The benefits of such events initiate more awareness of the greening process amongst attendees. This will help participants to become a part of more long term solutions therefore altering their environmental practices and the decision-making process. Such consciousness also helps them grow into better human beings and contribute greatly to the environment.

These are some of the benefits that organizers can enjoy once they go green.

Oracle CEO Larry Ellison Buys Malibu Home From Former Yahoo ...

Source: Business Week

From one CEO to another. Oracle CEO Larry Ellison has added another prime property to his already large collection of homes. The billionaire just bought a beachfront Malibu home from former Yahoo! CEO Terry Semel for $36,943,890, according to the LA Times. The transaction is the most expensive for Malibu this year but actually was a discount for Ellison. Semel originally listed the home for $50 million, recently dropping the price down to $40 million.

The 10,000-square-foot home was built in 1992. Designed by Michael Graves, it?s described as a ?jewel on Carbon Beach.? Ellison already owns a few other properties on Carbon Beach, aptly nicknamed ?Billionaires? Row.? He also owns a few homes on the other Billionaires? Row in San Francisco.

Made up of three pavilions, the home features contemporary architecture with enormous windows and skylights designed to take advantage of the ocean views. The home?s 9 bedrooms and 13 baths include a two-story guesthouse.

This isn?t Ellison?s most significant purchase, however. In June, the CEO dropped a whopping $500 million in a deal that gives him 98 percent of Hawaii?s tiny island of Lanai.

In a 30-minute address to the 193-nation U.N. General Assembly,?Obama called anew for the ouster of Syrian President?Bashar al-Assad?following an 18-month civil war without saying how to make it happen. He also offered no fresh ideas on solving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Beginning and ending his remarks by evoking Christopher Stevens, the U.S. ambassador to?Libya?who died with three other Americans in a Sept. 11 assault on the?American Consulate?in Benghazi,?Obama called on nations to fight such violence.

"Today, we must affirm that our future will be determined by people like?Chris Stevens, and not by his killers," said?Obama, who seeks re-election on Nov. 6. "Today, we must declare that this violence and intolerance has no place among our United Nations."

While condemning the violence sparked by a video made in?California?that depicts the Prophet Mohammad as a womanizer, fool and child abuser, several Muslim leaders called for international action to outlaw acts of blasphemy.

U.S. missions also came under attack in?Egypt,?Tunisia,?Indonesia?and other Muslim nations.

Obama - while repeating his condemnations of the video as "crude and disgusting" and stressing that the?U.S. government?had nothing to do with its production - staunchly defended free speech.

"The strongest weapon against hateful speech is not repression, it is more speech - the voices of tolerance that rally against bigotry and blasphemy,"?Obama said.

Saying it is necessary to "honestly address the tensions between the West and the Arab world" moving toward democracy,?Obama said he did not expect everyone to agree with him.

Yahoo! CEO Reveals New Direction | Small Business Trends

Yahoo! CEO Marissa Mayer announced her plans to turn the iconic tech giant around on Tuesday. Some critics insist the new plan is big picture and short on specifics. Small businesses, too, must sometimes reinvent themselves. Here is a closer look at the new Yahoo! battle plan and some thoughts for how you can turn your small business around when necessary.

Project Personalization

A new direction. In an ?act of radical transparency? Tuesday, new Yahoo! CEO Marissa Mayer introduced her plans for a new direction. Mayer sees the company?s strength as its ?personalization? in arenas ranging from e-mail to advertizing to content. Mayer?s other thoughts were less specific, but seemed to rally the troops at the company-run URL?s Caf?. The trick to turning your business around is to have a plan. All Things Digital

A new team. As part of her efforts to rejuvenate Yahoo!, Mayer has been recruiting a new team. The latest addition, also announced Tuesday, is Chief Financial Officer Ken Goldman. Assembling new talent or restructuring an existing team must be part of any business turnaround. What other steps are necessary to re-imagine your brand, product, or service? Read on! Yahoo! Inc.

Reinventing Your Brand

Keep it simple. Keep it safe. Another important step toward breathing new life into your business may be easier than you think. Instead of adding features to your products or services, making them more like your competitors, try focusing on one small feature that differentiates your product or service from all the rest, and simplify the buying decision for consumers by setting yourself apart. M4B Marketing

Perfect pitch. It?s not just your product or service features, but how you pitch them to your customers that really matters. Here are two case studies shared by blogger Diana Pohly that may give you a better idea of how to effectively put your offers into words. Telling your customers what sets you apart is an important step toward distinguishing your brand in the marketplace. Step By Step Marketing

Unleash your marketing Ninja. In the second post of this series, guest blogger Nicolas Dalleva talks about the analytics that will help you know your customers as well as they know themselves. Segmenting your customers lets you learn more about their behavior and buying trends individually and as a group, while helping you to remember that the customers you serve are people, not just numbers. Keep Up With The Web

Watch your mouth. The way you talk about selling to your customers betrays how you think. While selling is all about you, blogger David Brock suggests we change things up a bit. Let?s focus on the customer and fulfilling their needs instead of our desire to make a sale. Focusing on serving customers first by helping them make a decision about your product may seem obvious, but it may also be the key to transforming a business. Partners in Excellence

Make some measurements. Once you?ve got your team in place, measure their performance. Guest blogger Jessica Sanders makes this simple suggestion and then outlines some tools that will help you do it. Here are three creative ways to manage your team?s performance and improve your company at the same time. Make sure the team you?ve got is accomplishing what is needed to set your brand apart. bizCompare

BenQ we're not going back to cellphones and laptops, but check out our luxury lamps!

There was a time when the BenQ brand could be seen on laptops and mobile phones, but nowadays you'd have to turn your eyes to projectors, LCD monitors and cameras (in select markets) in order to spot it. If you're in China, you might have even come across the gigantic BenQ Medical Center in Nanjing. That's right, a hospital; and later this year BenQ will be opening another one in Suzhou, which is where the company's Chinese operation is based. Interesting times, right? But as to whether BenQ has any intention to re-enter the two mobile markets in the near future, the answer is a firm "no."

Windshield wiper for Mars dust developed: Actuator moved by materials that have shape memory

ScienceDaily (Sep. 24, 2012) ? A team of researchers at Universidad Carlos III in Madrid (UC3M) has developed a device that works as a windshield wiper to eliminate Mars dust from the sensors on the NASA spacecrafts that travel to the Red Planet.

The actuator, a type of brush made up of Teflon fibers that are moved by materials that have shape memory, was designed to clean the ultraviolet sensors that were part of the North American space agency's Curiosity mission, although, in the end, the device did not fly with the Martian rover. "In our laboratories, we demonstrated that it worked correctly in the extreme conditions that it would have to endure on Mars, with temperatures ranging between zero degrees and eighty below zero Celsius, and an atmospheric pressure one hundred times lower than that of the Earth," explains the head of the project at UC3M, Luis Enrique Moreno, a tenured professor in the Department of Systems and Automatics Engineering.

This device, whose technology will be used to carry out other space missions that are already under way, solves a problem presented by the atmosphere of Mars: the accumulation of iron dust on the flat surfaces of sensors. The Spanish firm Crisa, part of Astrium Espa?a, charged UC3M with developing this device, so that it could be built into the Curiosity mission's meteorological station, REMS (Rover Environmental Monitoring Station), which was developed by a consortium of research centers under the direction of the Centro de Astrobiolog?a (CSIC/INTA -- Astrobiology Center).

One of the greatest challenges presented by this type of project is to reduce its weight, given that launching any type of material into space is very expensive. Because of this, the design used in this device relied on a type of actuators based on material with shape memory alloys (SMA), a very light nickel and titanium alloy that allows movement when the composite is heated. "The main advantage is that these alloys produce a material that is very strong as related to its weight, that is, a thread of less than one millimeter can lift a weight of 4 or 5 kilograms," states Professor Moreno. "The problem presented by these mechanisms," he continues, "is that, because they are based on thermal effects, they are not as efficient as motor technology, although they are much lighter, which is a very important consideration in space missions."

This group and other research groups at the UC3M are currently working on a second, more elaborate prototype based on SMA technology; it will be used to clean dust from fixed meteorological stations that will be deployed as part of the MEIGA-METNET mission, whose Mars launch is set for the year 2014. "We are also using this technology to develop the exoskeletons used to aid people with mobility problems, trying to substitute motors with these materials, in order to reduce the devices' weight and increase agility in their use," points out Luis Enrique Moreno. According to the researchers, this new product could even be used in the future to improve the joints on the gloves used by astronauts during their excursions out of the spacecraft.

Credit History form

The following question about the variable impact of credit inquiries to your credit scores was submitted via Mint?s Facebook page.

Do you have a credit-related question for John Ulzheimer? Head over to the Mint.com Facebook page and ask away!

Question: When applying for a mortgage, I heard you can apply multiple times within 30 days and it only dings your credit once.

Does the 30 days start on the day of the first inquiry or 30 days from the most recent inquiry?

How much does it really affect your credit to have multiple pre-approvals?

Answer: Now, I?ve certainly written about credit inquiries before and have done so for Mint on occasion. But, this question isn?t really the same as, ?What is a credit inquiry??

The reader is asking a more detailed question about how scoring systems treat certain types of inquiries over different periods of time.

It?s been my experience that this variable treatment of credit inquires is one of the most difficult things to clearly explain.

What the Minter addressed in his question is the fact that FICO scores contain complex logic that attempts to differentiate credit inquiries caused by rate shopping, versus those caused by actually opening a new credit account.

For example, you can go to a car dealership, take a test drive, and then ask the Finance and Insurance Manager to shop out your credit to see what kinds of financing offers you can get from their lender partners.

Or, you can go to several mortgage brokers and get several good faith estimates, but they all need to pull your credit reports and, therefore, leave behind a credit inquiry.

In neither scenario has the consumer actually taken on any new debt, but it appears as though they?re thinking about it.

The challenge for the credit scoring system is to account for the added risk of the consumer shopping around for credit, but at the same time not penalizing him or her for being a smart consumer who is shopping for the best deal possible.

This is accomplished by FICO?s inquiry treatment logic.

How Does It Work?

The first thing the FICO score does is determine from which industry the inquiry was generated. That is very easy because inquiries are coded at the credit bureaus by industry.

So, a FICO score, and any other credit scoring system, uses the codes to tell the difference between a mortgage, auto, student loan, credit card, insurance and every other possible inquiry.

That?s important because the following logic only applies to mortgage, auto and student loan inquiries.

Now that FICO has identified a mortgage, auto or student loan inquiry on your credit report, the next thing is to determine how old the inquiry is.

This is important for two reasons. First, inquiries of any variety that are over 12 months old no longer count in your score.

Second, if the mortgage, auto, or student loan inquiry is less than 30 days old, it is ignored and doesn?t count in your score at all.

If the mortgage, auto or student loan inquiry is less than 12 months old, but greater than 30 days old, it?s fair game and can be considered when calculating your score.

If FICO finds a ?fair game? inquiry, then the model looks for other similar credit inquiries that have occurred within the same 45-day period and treats the group as just one inquiry.

The model assumes that you?re shopping for the best interest rate and not taking out two mortgages, two auto loans or multiple student loans.

Let?s do some examples of this logic and how it works with different inquiry scenarios.

Credit Card Inquiries

If you have four credit card inquiries that occurred 14, 28, 56 and 76 days ago, how would FICO interpret them?

This is a trick question because credit card inquiries are not subject to the aforementioned logic.

So, those four credit inquiries will be counted as four inquiries because you don?t shop around for the best interest rate for a credit card like you do for a mortgage, auto or student loan.

Auto Loan Inquiries

If you have four auto loan inquiries that occurred 14, 28, 56 and 76 days ago, how would FICO interpret them?

These four inquiries would be treated as one for the calculation of your score.

Can you explain why?

The first two (occurring 14 and 28 days ago) are both less than 30 days old, so they?re ignored.

The second two (occurring 56 and 76 days ago) are within 45 days of each other, so they?re counted as only one inquiry rather than two because the assumption is you?re shopping for a loan, not taking out two car loans.

Mortgage Loan Inquiries

If you have seven mortgage inquiries that occurred 3, 5, 8, 28, 56, 76 and 370 days ago, how would FICO interpret them?

Again, the four that are less than 30 days old would be ignored. The one that?s 370 days old is older than a year and therefore ignored.

And, the two that occurred on day 56 and 76 are within 45 days of each other and are treated collectively as just one inquiry.

Whatever you may think about FICO or credit scoring, it?s hard to argue that this isn?t extremely consumer friendly.

It allows for almost untethered freedom to shop for rate variable loans without worrying much, if at all, about your credit scores.
