Star-Spangled Cranberry-Apple Pie

Ingredients

Preparation

Preheat the oven to 375?F.

Bake one pie crust. Roll out the second pie crust and cut out a dozen small (1-1/2- to 2-inch) stars. Chill 30 minutes or longer if possible. Place them on a baking sheet and bake until golden brown. Reserve. (This can be done while you are prebaking the pie crust.)

Melt the butter in a large skillet. Add the brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, apples, and cranberries and gently stir to mix well and let the sugar dissolve. Cook over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally, until the cranberries have popped and the fruit is tender but the apples still have some body.

Remove the fruit with a slotted spoon and reserve. Bring the juices to the boil, reduce the heat, and simmer until they reduce and become thick and jammy, about 8 minutes. Stir the fruit into the thickened juice. Taste to be sure it is sweet enough, adding more sugar if necessary. If it is runny, boil down until the juices are reduced and thickened. The filling may be made ahead to this point several days or frozen for up to 3 months. When ready to use, reheat. Spoon the filling into the prebaked shell. Decorate the top with the stars. Serve with whipped cream or ice cream.

The untold story of gun violence - life-altering injuries

By Mary Wisniewski

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Miles Turner V, 18, was shot at least five times on a Chicago sidewalk last October. Doctors believed he might die, but he survived.

The high school football player, who had never been in any trouble, is now undergoing physical therapy, in hopes of being able to walk again.

"His life has changed dramatically from what it was," said his father, Miles Turner IV. "It's not easy."

Young Miles represents a largely untold side of the gun violence story. It's about the survivors who must live with costly and often permanently debilitating injuries.

The Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project, a group of national hospital databases, in 2009 showed 76,100 emergency room visits for gunshot wounds, about half of which involved assault. That same year, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control logged 11,493 firearm homicides - less than a third of the number of assault injuries.

One notable example of a gunshot survivor whose life was permanently changed is former Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, who was shot in the head during a public appearance in 2011. She retired from Congress to focus on a lengthy recovery.

"Just looking at the number of deaths misses the enormity of the problem of street shootings," said David Hemenway, director of the Harvard Injury Control Research Center, who would like to see more research done on non-fatal gunshot injuries. "Until you can quantify the enormity of the problem, you can't figure out what interventions work and don't work."

MILES TURNER'S RECOVERY

Miles Turner V was around the corner from his home on Chicago's South Side, talking with a girl on her porch, when his cousin came by. Unlike Miles, who took no interest in street life, Modell McCambry, 17, was a gang "wannabe," according to Miles' father.

A gunman stepped out of the gangway and shot Modell. As Miles bent over to embrace his mortally wounded cousin, he was shot in the back, his parents said. The assailant has not been caught.

Miles was so gravely wounded that after one surgery, doctors told his father the youth's intestines fell through their hands when they picked them up. He remained in a medically induced coma for weeks.

Around Christmas, Miles was moved to a specialty wound center, and then to the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago before going home in May. Teachers from Leo Catholic High School tutored him so he could keep up with his education, and he graduated June 2.

Adjustment to the physical changes in his life has been difficult for Miles. The former athlete has a catheter and needs a wheelchair to move around. His parents rise early to help him wash and get dressed, before they go to work.

Normally sociable and with a good sense of humor, during his treatments Miles was sometimes withdrawn, said his mother, Angela Turner.

She recalled sitting at his bedside and telling him: "It's unfortunate that this happened to you but He spared your life, so it's not the end. It's just something we have to deal with right now."

COSTLY INJURIES

A shooting - fatal or not - is a nest of different costs, including the price of criminal justice and the destruction of a community by fear, Hemenway said.

"The medical care costs can be very hard - the victim's quality of life goes way down, and the costs to society can be enormous," he said.

It is difficult to say if advances in medical care have decreased deaths or improved injury outcomes, said Hemenway, since firearms, like medicine, have become more potent.

Injuries from firearms cost close to $21 billion in 2010, according to a study published in 2012 by the Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation, a non-profit independent research group. Factored into the costs are lost work time, medical care, emergency transport services and police work, the study said.

In Cook County, which includes Chicago, every gunshot victim that enters the public hospital system costs taxpayers an average of $52,000. There were 846 reported victims in 2012, putting the costs at about $44 million.

"The terrible truth is the people who die cost us less than the people who live," said County Board President Toni Preckwinkle, speaking on the issue last fall.

This is a plague that affects mostly young males. Assault-related gunshot injuries are nine times higher among men, and three times more likely for victims aged 18-29 than any other age group, according to the healthcare project.

Nationally, 44 percent of injuries related to assault in 2009 involved victims without insurance, while 25 percent were billed to Medicaid, the project found.

Miles Turner's medical bills have been covered largely by insurance from his parents' jobs.

But incidental costs have hit hard. Parking, for example, cost $24, twice a day, at one facility. The shootings drove away tenants from the buildings the Turners own, which has forced them to dig into retirement savings to pay bills.

CONSEQUENCES OF SURVIVAL

Sometimes a non-fatal shooting can be a turning point that brings someone out of a dangerous lifestyle, according to Dr. Marie Crandall, a surgeon at Chicago's Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

Northwestern refers injured people to CeaseFire Illinois, an anti-violence group that works to stem gang shootings and offers resources such as job skill training.

"People have definitely told me, in post-op follow ups, that this injury has set them straight," Crandall said. "It's sad, and it's an opportunity."

But she sometimes sees the same people in the trauma center more than once.

Even for those whose lives are not ruled by violence, a gunshot wound can change priorities. Chicago native Andrew Holmes was shot in the leg during an attempted robbery when he was in his 20s. It took him six painful months to learn to walk again.

Now 53, he said care shown by medical staff inspired him to become a community activist against violence. "A person's life is turned all the way around," Holmes said.

Miles Turner V hopes to attend the University of Miami, and learn how to make video games. His parents say he will likely enroll at a community college first. And Illinois Governor Pat Quinn, upon learning that Miles was good with computers, has offered him a job.

Miles Turner IV said he never asked God why this happened to his youngest child. "The only thing I asked the Lord was to let my son live."

But he does get angry at the young people on the streets who seem to care little about the damage bullets can do.

"It destroys everything," said Turner.

LG BP730

Blu-ray players have come a long way in a few years. It used to be that $300 would get you a "high-end" Blu-ray player that could load a disc in a minute and maybe access Netflix. Now nearly every Blu-ray player is connected, solid models are available for just over $100 (like our budget Editors' Choice, the Panasonic DMP-BDT230), and midrange models offer remarkably fast speeds. The LG BP730 is a $199.99 (list) Blu-ray player that doesn't just pack a ton of features into its attractive design, but loads discs consistently in less than 20 seconds.

The BP730 is very full-featured, with nearly every bell or whistle you could want for a Blu-ray player?save high-end home theater connections like the second HDMI port, analog surround audio outputs, or RS232C port found on the high-end Editors' Choice Oppo BDP-103. The BP730 supports Blu-ray, has built-in Wi-Fi a/b/g/n for accessing LG's Smart TV apps, and perhaps most interestingly, supports extensive smartphone integration: The player comes with an NFC sticker so you can connect your NCF-enabled smartphone to the player with a tap. LG's remote app can not only control the player and stream content to and from the player, but can turn your smartphone into a wireless headphone device for watching movies quietly.

Design
The Blu-ray player's design is black and angular, measuring 1.6 by 16.9 by 7.8 inches (HWD) and weighing a solid three pounds. It consists of a brushed metallic black top half and a glossy black lower half that holds the controls and display. Instead of a disc tray, the player uses a slot-loading optical drive located on the left half of the player, on the seam between the brushed and glossy black halves. The right half holds on the glossy black part facing up a row of touch-sensitive LED-backlit controls, and on the glossy black part facing forward a blue LED display and a USB port covered by a small door. The back of the player holds a minimum of ports: an HDMI port, an Ethernet port, and an optical audio output.

Remote and Features
Instead of a conventional remote, the BP730 comes with a curved Magic Remote similar to the remotes that come with LG's connected HDTVs. It's dominated by a large navigation pad with a scroll wheel that doubles as a main button, and features only a few other buttons including playback controls and four color buttons. The remote works as a motion controller, moving an on-screen cursor in addition to the standard navigation pad menu item selection. I've complained about LG's Magic Remote in the past because of the scroll wheel doubling as a button, but the scroll wheel on this remote is much stiffer than previous remotes, so I found myself almost never accidentally pinning the wheel with my thumb when pressing the button.

LG's Smart TV system gives the BP730 loads of online content. Not only does it have a wide selection of online services in its Premium menu including Netflix and Hulu Plus, but it has a library of smaller and more specialized apps on top of them. It also features a Web browser that is made easier to use with the on-screen cursor and the Magic Remote, even if typing remains clunky. With DLNA support and app-based remote control and media streaming support for mobile devices, the BP730 can display your media regardless of how you want to access it. The only thing it seems to miss on this front is an SD card slot, though the USB port can be used to access your media that isn't networked.

Performance
The BP730 is blazingly fast. I tested its speed by taking the average load times of three Blu-ray discs (in this case, Piranha, The Amazing Spider-Man, and Black Swan) six times each from inserting the disc to first showing information on the screen. Between the three discs, the BP730 took an average of 15 seconds to start playing, and even the slower-than-usual?Black Swan clocked in at 18.7 seconds, with a particularly sluggish 22.5 load time the first time I put the disc in. For comparison, the Panasonic DMP-BDT230 took an average of 17.3 seconds to load a disc.

We test Blu-ray player video processing with the HQV 2.0 benchmark Blu-ray disc, and the BP730 passed all video tests with flying colors. It handled both 30fps video and 24fps film footage easily, and showed little to no judder or tearing from horizontal motion.

The LG BP730 is a shining example of how far Blu-ray players have come in the last few years. It's loaded with features, takes about 15 seconds to load most discs, and handles any video format you throw at it without processing issues. Since it's missing certain ports and connections, it doesn't quite have the flexibility to integrate into a complicated, high-end home theater system. But at $200 it's easily our new midrange Editors' Choice for Blu-ray players. You can save some money with the Editors' Choice budget Panasonic DMP-BDT230, but the BP730's extra features and slightly quicker performance are worth the extra cash.

Vatican bank cooperating with Italian probe

An undated photo of Monsignor Nunzio Scarano in Salerno, Italy. A Vatican official already under investigation in a purported money-laundering plot involving the Vatican bank was arrested Friday, June 28, 2013, in a separate operation: Prosecutors allege he tried to bring 20 million euros ($26 million) in cash into Italy from Switzerland aboard an Italian government plane, his lawyer said. Monsignor Nunzio Scarano, a recently suspended accountant in one of the Vatican's main financial departments, is accused of fraud, corruption and slander stemming from the plot, which never got off the ground, attorney Silverio Sica told The Associated Press. He said Scarano was a middleman in the operation: Friends had asked him to intervene with a broker, Giovanni Carenzio, to return 20 million euros they had given him to invest. Sica said Scarano persuaded Carenzio to return the money, and an Italian secret service agent, Giovanni Maria Zito, went to Switzerland to bring the cash back aboard an Italian government aircraft. Such a move would presumably prevent any reporting of the money coming into Italy. The operation failed because Carenzio reneged on the deal, Sica said. (AP Photo/Francesco Pecoraro)

VATICAN CITY (AP) -- The troubled Vatican bank says it is cooperating with Italian investigators who arrested a Vatican official over an alleged plot to bring 20 million euros ($26 million) into Italy from Switzerland illegally.

Monsignor Nunzio Scarano, a recently suspended accountant in one of the Vatican's main finance departments, was arrested early Friday along with a secret service agent and a financier.

Vatican bank spokesman Max Hohenberg said the bank was cooperating and that its board had launched an internal investigation.

ITC judge rules against InterDigital in first round of 3G patent case

After two long years, the International Trade Commission has finally come to a decision in favor of Huawei, Nokia and ZTE in a 3G patent case brought by InterDigital in 2011. According to an ITC judge, the three phone manufacturers did not violate the seven InterDigital-owned patents that covers various WCDMA and CDMA2000 technologies used to make their devices. InterDigital even went so far as to request the ban of US sales of these devices pending a decision. The Pennsylvania-based company filed a similar complaint against LG, which chose a settlement instead of going through the courts. Still, this is just a preliminary ruling; the final decision of the case is expected in October.

Feds: Boston suspect downloaded bomb instructions

BOSTON (AP) ? Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev downloaded bomb-making instructions from an al-Qaida magazine, gathered online material on Islamic jihad and martyrdom, and later scrawled anti-American messages inside the boat where he lay wounded, a federal indictment charged Thursday.

The 30-count indictment contains the bombing charges, punishable by the death penalty, that were brought against the 19-year-old Tsarnaev in April.

But prosecutors added charges covering the slaying of an MIT police officer and the carjacking of a motorist during the getaway attempt that left Tsarnaev's older brother, Tamerlan, dead.

"Tamerlan Tsarnaev's justice will be in the next world, but for his brother, accountability will begin right here in the district of Massachusetts," Suffolk District Attorney Daniel Conley, whose jurisdiction includes Boston, said at a news conference with federal prosecutors.

Three people were killed and more than 260 wounded by the two pressure-cooker bombs that went off near the finish line of the marathon on April 15.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was captured four days later, hiding in a boat parked in a backyard in Watertown, Mass.

According to the indictment, he scrawled messages on the inside of the vessel that said, among other things, "The U.S. Government is killing our innocent civilians," ''I can't stand to see such evil go unpunished," and "We Muslims are one body you hurt one you hurt us all."

The Tsarnaev brothers had roots in the turbulent Russian regions of Dagestan and Chechnya, which have become recruiting grounds for Islamic extremists. They had been living in the U.S. about a decade.

But the indictment made no mention of any larger conspiracy beyond the brothers, and no reference to any direct overseas contacts with extremists. Instead, the indictment suggests the Internet played an important role in the suspects' radicalization.

Before the attack, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev downloaded onto his computer the summer 2010 issue of Inspire, an online English-language magazine published by al-Qaida, according to the indictment. The issue detailed how to make bombs from pressure cookers, explosive powder extracted from fireworks, and lethal shrapnel.

He also downloaded extremist Muslim literature, including "Defense of the Muslim Lands, the First Obligation After Imam," which advocates "violence designed to terrorize the perceived enemies of Islam," the indictment said.

Another tract downloaded included a foreword by Anwar al-Awlaki, an American propagandist for al-Qaida who was killed in a U.S. drone strike, federal prosecutors said.

U.S. Attorney Carmen Ortiz of Massachusetts said it will be up to Attorney General Eric Holder to decide whether to pursue the death penalty against Tsarnaev.

The indictment assembled and confirmed details of the case that have been widely reported over the past two months, and added new pieces of information.

For example, it confirmed that Tamerlan Tsarnaev bought 48 fireworks mortar shells containing about eight pounds of explosive powder from a Seabrook, N.H., fireworks store. It also disclosed that he used the Internet to order electronic components that could be used in making bombs.

The papers detail how the brothers then placed knapsacks containing shrapnel-packed bombs near the finish line of the 26.2-mile race.

The court papers also confirm that Dzhokhar Tsarnaev contributed to his brother's death by accidentally running him over with a stolen vehicle during a shootout and police chase.

The charges cover the slaying of Massachusetts Institute of Technology police officer Sean Collier, who authorities said was shot in the head at close range in his cruiser by the Tsarnaevs during their getaway attempt. The brothers tried to take his gun, prosecutors said.

In addition, prosecutors said that during the carjacking, the Tsarnaev brothers forced the motorist to turn over his ATM card and his password, and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev withdrew $800 from the man's account.

At the same time the federal indictment was announced, Massachusetts authorities brought a 15-count state indictment against Dzhokhar Tsarnaev over the MIT officer's slaying and the police shootout.

Biochemists identify protease substrates important for bacterial growth and development

June 27, 2013 ? Reporting this month in Molecular Microbiology, Peter Chien and colleagues at the University of Massachusetts Amherst describe using a combination of biochemistry and mass spectrometry to "trap" scores of new candidate substrates of the protease ClpXP to reveal how protein degradation is critical to cell cycle progression and bacterial development. The new understanding could lead to identifying new antibiotic targets.

As Chien (pronounced Chen) explains, to carry out fundamental life processes such as growing and dividing, cells must orchestrate, in time and location, the production and degradation of hundreds of protein substrates. Even in simple bacteria, protein degradation is critical for making sure these organisms can grow and respond to their environment properly.

Scientists have known that a group of protein machines called energy-dependent proteases are responsible for the majority of this degradation, but what targets these machines recognize and how they do it has been unknown in many cases.

With the new series of experiments in the model bacteria Caulobacter crescentus in the Chien biochemistry and molecular biology laboratory, much more is now understood, he says. "We first generated a protease mutant that could recognize but not destroy its targets, acting as a 'trap' for protease substrates. After purifying this trap from living cells, we used mass spectrometry to identify proteins that were caught, finding over a hundred new candidate substrates. These targets covered all aspects of bacterial growth, including DNA replication, transcription and cytoskeletal changes."

Next, they focused on one of these new targets in detail, a protein called TacA. Caulobacter grow by making two different cell types every time they divide. TacA is responsible for making sure that one of these cell types forms properly.

"We used biochemistry and highly purified proteins to identify what parts of TacA were important for degradation by the ClpXP protease," Chien says. "We then made mutants of TacA that could not be degraded and found that when we expressed them in bacteria, these cells failed to properly develop into the correct cell types. Because developmental changes are essential for pathogenic bacteria to invade their host, these insights could potentially identify new antibiotic targets."

The work was funded by a grant from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences at the National Institutes of Health and by UMass Amherst.

Six Libyan soldiers killed in ambush: army | Morocco World News

TRIPOLI, June 25, 2013 (AFP)

Unknown gunmen launched a dawn attack on Tuesday on a Libyan army checkpoint south of Sirte, the home town of former dictator Moamer Kadhafi, killing six soldiers, a military officer said.

?An attack at dawn Tuesday against a checkpoint of the army in the town of Khuchum al-Kheil, south of Sirte, killed six soldiers who were on guard duty,? local military officer Khaled al-Akari was quoted as saying by Lana news agency.

?Two vehicles were burned in the attack,? said the officer, adding that the ?area was cordoned off and a search was on to find the attackers?.

Sirte, the last bastion of Kadhafi to fall into rebel hands in the 2011 uprising, has been largely untouched by the wave of violence shaking the country since the former ruler?s regime fell.

Libya?s new authorities are battling to establish military and security institutions capable of restoring law and order and state authority in the face of armed militias who fought Kadhafi?s forces.

(AP) ? The White House pressed Russia Tuesday to extradite National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden to face espionage charges, despite Moscow's blunt rejection in a diplomatic face-off threatening recent attempts by the two country's presidents to strengthen their ties.

Snowden's globe-trotting evasion of U.S. authorities already has set back President Barack Obama's recent attempts to cultivated relations with China.

Relations with both countries have been at the forefront of Obama's foreign policy agenda this month, underscoring the intertwined interests among these uneasy partners. Obama met just last week with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the Group of Eight summit in Northern Ireland and held an unusual two-day summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping in California earlier this month.

Obama has made no known phone calls to Xi since Snowden surfaced in Hong Kong earlier this month, nor has he talked to Putin since Snowden arrived in Russia.

Putin said that because there is no extradition agreement with the U.S., it couldn't meet the U.S. request for extradition.

"Mr. Snowden is a free man, and the sooner he chooses his final destination the better it is for us and for him," Putin said. "I hope it will not affect the business-like character of our relations with the U.S. and I hope that our partners will understand that."

National Security Council spokeswoman Caitlin Hayden responded in a statement that the White House doesn't want Snowden to negatively impact relations with Russia. But she argued Russia has the "clear legal authority" to expel him from a Moscow airport.

"We are asking the Russian government to take action to expel Mr. Snowden without delay and to build upon the strong law enforcement cooperation we have had, particularly since the Boston Marathon bombing," she said.

Former Rep. Jane Harman, D-Calif., said it wasn't clear that Obama's "charm offensive" with Xi and Putin would matter much on this issue. The U.S. has "very little leverage," she said, given the broad array of issues on which the Obama administration needs Chinese and Russian cooperation.

"This isn't happening in a vacuum, and obviously China and Russia know that," said Harman, who now runs the Woodrow Wilson International Center.

Both the U.S. and China had hailed the Obama-Xi summit as a fresh start to a complex relationship, with the leaders building personal bonds during an hour-long walk through the grounds of the Sunnylands estate. But any easing of tensions appeared to vanish Monday following China's apparent flouting of U.S. demands that Snowden be returned from semi-autonomous Hong Kong to face espionage charges.

White House spokesman Jay Carney, in unusually harsh language, said China had "unquestionably" damaged its relationship with Washington.

"The Chinese have emphasized the importance of building mutual trust," Carney said. "We think that they have dealt that effort a serious setback. If we cannot count on them to honor their legal extradition obligations, then there is a problem."

A similar problem may be looming with Russia, where Snowden arrived Sunday.

During a stop in Saudi Arabia, Secretary of State John Kerry said that while it's true the United States does not have an extradition treaty with Russia, Moscow should comply with common law practices between countries concerning fugitives. "I would simply appeal for calm and reasonableness," Kerry said. "We would hope that Russia would not side with someone who is 'a fugitive' from justice.' "

The U.S. has deep economic ties with China and needs the Asian power's help in persuading North Korea to end its nuclear provocations. The Obama administration also needs Russia's cooperation in ending the bloodshed in Syria and reducing nuclear stockpiles held by the former Cold War foes.

Members of Congress so far have focused their anger on China and Russia, not on Obama's inability to get either country to abide by U.S. demands. However, Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y., said in an interview with CNN on Monday that he was starting to wonder why the president hasn't been "more forceful in dealing with foreign leaders."

Sen. John McCain, who lost to Obama in the 2008 presidential election, echoed that concern on Tuesday, telling CNN that "we've got to start dealing with Vladimir Putin for what he is."

The Arizona Republican called Putin "an old KGB colonel apparatchik" who disdains democracy and said that Putin "continues to stick his thumb in our eye."

"When you show the world you're leading from behind, these are the consequences," McCain said.

Former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton echoed the White House's frustration with China. "That kind of action is not only detrimental to the U.S.-China relationship but it sets a bad precedent that could unravel the intricate international agreements about how countries respect the laws ? and particularly the extradition treaties," the possible 2016 presidential contender told an audience in Los Angeles.

Snowden fled to Hong Kong after seizing highly classified documents disclosing U.S. surveillance programs that collect vast amounts of U.S. phone and Internet records. He shared the information with The Guardian and Washington Post newspapers. He also told the South China Morning Post that "the NSA does all kinds of things like hack Chinese cellphone companies to steal all of your SMS data." SMS, or short messaging service, generally means text messaging.

Snowden still has perhaps more than 200 sensitive documents, Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., chairwoman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, said over the weekend.

Hong Kong, a former British colony with a degree of autonomy from mainland China, has an extradition treaty with the U.S. Officials in Hong Kong said a formal U.S. extradition request did not fully comply with its laws, a claim the Justice Department disputes.

The White House made clear it believes the final decision to let Snowden leave for Russia was made by Chinese officials in Beijing.

Russia's ultimate response to U.S. pressure remains unclear. Putin could still agree to return Snowden to the U.S. But he may also let him stay in Russia or head elsewhere, perhaps to Ecuador or Venezuela ? both options certain to earn the ire of the White House.

Fiona Hill, a Russia expert at the Washington-based Brookings Institution, said she expected Putin to take advantage of a "golden opportunity" to publicly defy the White House.

"This is one of those opportunities to score points against the United States that I would be surprised if Russia passed up," Hill said.

Different neural circuits process environmental signals depending on the state of satiation

This news release is available in German.

Hungry people are often difficult to deal with. A good meal can affect more than our mood, it can also influence our willingness to take risks. This phenomenon is also apparent across a very diverse range of species in the animal kingdom. Experiments conducted on the fruit fly, Drosophila, by scientists at the Max Planck Institute of Neurobiology in Martinsried have shown that hunger not only modifies behaviour, but also changes pathways in the brain.

Animal behaviour is radically affected by the availability and amount of food. Studies prove that the willingness of many animals to take risks increases or declines depending on whether the animal is hungry or full. For example, a predator only hunts more dangerous prey when it is close to starvation. This behaviour has also been documented in humans in recent years: one study showed that hungry subjects took significantly more financial risks than their sated colleagues.

Also the fruit fly, Drosophila, changes its behaviour depending on its nutritional state. The animals usually perceive even low quantities of carbon dioxide to be a sign of danger and opt to take flight. However, rotting fruit and plants the flies' main sources of food also release carbon dioxide. Neurobiologists in Martinsried have now discovered how the brain deals with this constant conflict in deciding between a hazardous substance and a potential food source taking advantage of the fly as a great genetic model organism for circuit neuroscience.

In various experiments, the scientists presented the flies with environments containing carbon dioxide or a mix of carbon dioxide and the smell of food. It emerged that hungry flies overcame their aversion to carbon dioxide significantly faster than fed flies if there was a smell of food in the environment at the same time. Facing the prospect of food, hungry animals are therefore significantly more willing to take risks than sated flies. But how does the brain manage to decide between these options?

Avoiding carbon dioxide is an innate behaviour and should therefore be generated outside the mushroom body in the fly's brain: previously, the nerve cells in the mushroom body were linked only with learning and behaviour patterns that are based on learned associations. However, when the scientists temporarily disabled these nerve cells, hungry flies no longer showed any reaction whatsoever to carbon dioxide. The behaviour of fed flies, on the other hand, remained the same: they avoided the carbon dioxide.

In further studies, the researchers identified a projection neuron which transports the carbon dioxide information to the mushroom body. This nerve cell is crucial in triggering a flight response in hungry, but not in fed animals. "In fed flies, nerve cells outside the mushroom body are enough for flies to flee from the carbon dioxide. In hungry animals, however, the nerve cells are in the mushroom body and the projection neuron, which carries the carbon dioxide information there, is essential for the flight response. If mushroom body or projection neuron activity is blocked, only hungry flies are no longer concerned about the carbon dioxide," explains Ilona Grunwald-Kadow, who headed the study.

The results show that the innate flight response to carbon dioxide in fruit flies is controlled by two parallel neural circuits, depending on how satiated the animals are. "If the fly is hungry, it will no longer rely on the 'direct line' but will use brain centres to gauge internal and external signals and reach a balanced decision," explains Grunwald-Kadow. "It is fascinating to see the extent to which metabolic processes and hunger affect the processing systems in the brain," she adds.

House investigators: Disability judges too lax

WASHINGTON (AP) ? U.S. House investigators say Social Security is approving state-rejected claims for disability benefits at strikingly high rates for people who might not deserve them. Compounding the problem, the agency often fails to do required follow-up reviews to make sure people still qualify for benefits months or years later.

Claims for benefits have increased by 25 percent since 2007, pushing the fund that supports the disability program to the brink of insolvency. Social Security officials say the primary driver of the increase is a surge in baby boomers more prone to disabilities as they age but not quite old enough to qualify for retirement benefits.

Investigators from the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee say management problems also add to the financial problems of the cash-strapped program.

White House expects Russia to look at all options to expel Snowden back to U.S.

DEAR ABBY: I was taken away from my parents at 13 and placed into foster care, where I stayed until I aged out at 21. My biological mother is a drug addict who abandoned me to my father when I was 11. She never tried to contact me while I was in care.I am now 24 and she won't leave me alone. She sends Facebook messages that alternate between begging me to let her get to know me, and condemning me for being vindictive and not having forgiveness in my heart. Abby, this woman exposed me to drugs and all manner of seedy people and situations. ...

New IRS chief: Inappropriate screening was broader

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The head of the Internal Revenue Service says inappropriate screening of groups seeking tax-exempt status was broader and lasted longer than was previously disclosed.

Danny Werfel told reporters Monday that after becoming acting IRS chief last month, he discovered inappropriate and wide-ranging criteria in lists screeners use to single out groups for careful examinations. He did not specify what terms were on the lists.

Werfel's comments suggest the IRS may have been targeting groups other than tea party and other conservative organizations for tough examinations to see if they qualify. The agency has been under fire since last month for targeting those groups.

Werfel said he has suspended use of those lists. Investigators have previously said agency officials abolished targeting of conservative groups in those lists in May 2012.

Look up in the sky for a super sight: the biggest and brightest full moon of the year.

The so-called supermoon will appear 14 percent larger than normal early Sunday as our celestial neighbor swings closer to Earth. Some may think the supermoon looks more dazzling, but it's actually an optical illusion. The moon looms larger on the horizon next to trees and buildings.

The moon will come within 222,000 miles of Earth and turn full around 7:30 a.m. EDT, making it the best time to view.

Are loli's playable here?

I know some sites don't allow you to play as them, for whatever reason. It's just well..they ARE popular in Japan in used a lot in anime...even games and as a canon player it annoys me a bit when sites restrict the kind of characters you can play. I'm not even talking for mature rps either. Granted lolis aren't my favorite but there are some I just find really funny (Like Squid Girl x3) and would like to play them but I just find it odd.

Now that I think on it, I know why...but it's still odd. I guess Japan just thinks of it differently, not that I am Japanese I just watch too much anime :P

Snowden extradition battle in Hong Kong could go on for years

By James Pomfret

HONG KONG (Reuters) - A former U.S. National Security Agency (NSA) contractor charged with spying by the United States and in hiding in Hong Kong is expected to be the subject of a formal extradition request at any time in what could drag into a legal battle lasting years.

Since making his revelations about massive U.S. surveillance programs, legal sources in Hong Kong say Edward Snowden, 30, has sought legal representation from human rights lawyers as he prepares to fight U.S. attempts to force him home for trial.

U.S. authorities have charged Snowden with theft of U.S. government property, unauthorized communication of national defense information and willful communication of classified communications intelligence to an unauthorized person, with the latter two charges coming under the U.S. Espionage Act.

The United States and Hong Kong signed an extradition treaty which came into effect in 1998, a year after Hong Kong returned from British to Chinese rule. Scores of Americans have been sent back home for trial since then.

While espionage and theft of state secrets are not cited specifically in the treaty, equivalent charges could be pressed against Snowden under Hong Kong's Official Secrets Ordinance, legal experts said.

If Hong Kong authorities did not charge Snowden with an equivalent crime, authorities could not extradite him, lawyers said. In the absence of charges, Snowden was also theoretically free to leave the city, one legal expert said.

Simon Young, a law professor at the University of Hong Kong, said that while the first charge involving theft might readily find equivalence in Hong Kong, the latter two spying offences will likely attract "litigation and dispute" in the courts.

The timeframe for such proceedings remains unclear, but Hectar Pun, a lawyer with human rights expertise, was quoted as saying such an extradition could take three to five years.

Under Hong Kong's extradition mechanism, a request first goes through diplomatic channels to Hong Kong's leader, who decides whether to issue an "authority to proceed". If granted, a magistrate issues a formal warrant for the arrest of Snowden.

Once brought before the court, the judge would decide whether there was sufficient evidence to commit Snowden to trial or dismiss the case, though any decision could be appealed in a higher court.

Snowden could claim political asylum in Hong Kong, arguing he would face torture back home. Article six of the treaty states extradition should be refused for "an offence of a political character".

"The unfairness of his trial at home and his likely treatment in custody" were important factors to consider for Snowden, said Young, the law professor, on Snowden's chances of claiming political immunity from extradition.

Should a Hong Kong court eventually call for Snowden's extradition, Hong Kong's leader and China could, however, still veto the decision on national security or defense grounds.

Snowden has admitted leaking secrets about classified U.S. surveillance programs, which he said he did in the public interest. Supporters say he is a whistleblower, while critics call him a criminal and perhaps even a traitor.
