Business in fact is an economic activity; ;however, business, managers, to be effective, must also consider the non-economic environment of business.

Government has its own form, structure, style and philosophy and depending upon the nature of Government at work, business has to organize its activity; the businessmen have to define their respective business strategy and business tactics.

Government formulates and executes a number of policies and programs and in case the Government frequently changes its industrial licensing policy, tax policy or trade policy and the like, then it unnerves the business sector and thereby affects business investment and related activities.

Acer files suit against former CEO Gianfranco Lanci over non-compete breach

Gianfranco Lanci may be gone from Acer, but the PC maker's former chief is not forgotten -- not financially, at least. The company is suing the exec over non-compete violations, after he jumped ship around this time last year. The exec recently landed a gig at Lenovo as head of its Europe, Middle East and Africa division, after doing some time as a consultant for the company. Acer filed the suit in Lanci's native Italy, alleging that he "has clearly breached the terms" of the 12-month non-compete. No word yet on how much the company is seeking with the claim.

Bringing a 'wow' factor to West Palm's art fair | Palm Beach ...

Paul Stapleton transforms ordinary objects into an unusual breed of sculpture. (Photo provided)

Things are changing in the art world, changing fast.

The evidence will be on view at the 16th annual American International Art Fair, which opens in downtown West Palm Beach Friday for a 10-day run.

What began as an art and antique fair is making a transition to an art and design fair.

The colors will be stark ? black and white and gray, with LED lighting throughout the show. "There?s a movement toward minimalist works," says David Lester, whose company runs this fair and January?s ArtPalmBeach.

"A contemporary home tends to have white walls and neutral colors. The furnishings of today are rarely as ornate as in the past. Mar-a-Lago was typical of Palm Beach in its time, but today?s house is much more contemporary in nature."

Directions, invite a friend, nearby dining

The fair will still present a broad range, from 19th- and 20th-century paintings and photographs and sculpture to objects that are intrinsically beautiful, from a 17th-century Stradivarius violin to World War I-vintage automobiles.

A daily lecture schedule will cover everything from investing in art to discussions on Rembrandt, Faberg? and Chinese contemporary ink painting. The granddaughter of Andrew Wyeth will talk about her family?s paintings.

The idea, Lester says, is to present an eye-pleasing variety.

"We are like a movie theater ? we?re a platform. If you show Casablanca every night, after a week people get bored," says Lester. "My goal is to re-create a much more theatrical event in the convention center, as it was when we were in the big tent on Okeechobee ? more of a wow factor for collectors.

"We have to remember that we?re in the entertainment business ? shopping for cultural entertainment. Brown furniture is having a hard time; chrome is hot. We?re living in the day of the Droid and the iPhone, it?s not a black phone from Ma Bell anymore."

This broadening of definitions is taking place at the same time as a loosening of the purse strings, which was signaled last year when a lovely Renoir went for $9.8 million at the fair. Suddenly, art is selling again, on the high end and for younger, emerging artists.

"It?s much better than it was even two years ago," says Sarah Gavlak of the Gavlak Gallery in Palm Beach. "People are more confident."

What seems to be happening is that since conventional investments have had a rocky ride of late, people are much more interested in investing in tangible objects ? gold, silver, wine, art.

"When the market dips 400 points, and people scramble for liquidity," says Gavlak, "the greatest opportunity comes from blue- chip contemporary art. There?s less risk than there is in trading pork bellies. If you have a Warhol or a Rauschenberg, those objects and images have a built-in, absolute solid market value, and they can be sold in three days."

Things are jumping to such an extent that local artist Bruce Helander is now editing a glossy magazine called The Art Economist, which accepts no advertising and regularly lists the top 300 artists in terms of their auction prices.

For Helander, it?s a switch.

"In the ?60s and ?70s, for artists that were too commercial, made too much money, it was a negative. Now, Jeff Koons and Damien Hirst are celebrated in the marketplace. They?re labeled as geniuses by many, but they?re very strict marketers and money managers, and it shows. And it hasn?t taken away from their work."

The Internet has changed the way the collecting game is played, opening up a market that, as Helander puts it, was once as veiled as "a sheik?s daughter in the Dubai airport."

"If someone wants to find out what something is worth," says David Lester, "they can go online and look at the sale prices for a hundred pieces by that artist."

That resulting body of knowledge may also be why there?s a lot more bargaining than there used to be.

Lester feels that the traditional gallery system is failing, and that the growth is in art fairs and online, but then he?s not exactly unbiased. He points to the retail figures for December; conventional retail increased by a little less than 1 percent, online increased 17 percent. "That has to come at the expense of bricks and mortar," he says.

Gavlak says that despite the improved economy, which has resulted in a freer flow of money, quality remains of paramount importance.

"Look, anybody can buy merchandise, but if you?re serious about collecting art, it?s a different story," she says. "It?s about watching the artists of our time who are showing their ideas and watching them go from graduate school to a gallery to having well received exhibitions, to getting bought by museums and collections.

"When you get in on the ground floor of that, it?s very exciting, as well as a validation of your own taste."

W e have our goals, and then we have our routines. Oftentimes, our routines don?t do very much good towards meeting our ultimate goals. It?s not anything to freak out about, though. If you?re working really hard and not getting the results you desire, it may be the case that a couple of minor tweaks here and there will make all the difference.

When it comes to fitness and health nutrition, these distinctions really come into play. Not enough of this, or too much of that, will throw things off completely if you?re not careful. Here are a few helpful tips for those of you who?d like to optimize your nutrition? and proceed to the next level!

One of the most common mistakes for athletes and health nuts alike is not to get enough potassium. With the amount of salt most of us take in, it is imperative that our potassium intake is commensurate. Potassium is not just essential to nerve function and water management; it also plays an extremely important role in muscle recovery.

You probably know that bananas, oranges, and other fruits are usually good sources of potassium already. However, some other overlooked sources are milk, nuts, and most meats. Without enough potassium in your system, your workouts won?t be nearly as effective as they ought to be.

While we?re on the subject of electrolytic minerals, you should really bone up on your magnesium as well. Magnesium is one of the most important minerals not only for nerve and muscle function, but also for dozens of your hormones. It is commonly heavily depleted from over farmed soils, so supplementation is often necessary. Tree nuts generally contain a lot of magnesium, however, so if you want to go natural, do it this way.

Hydration is always to be taken very seriously. If dehydration becomes a chronic problem, it can throw you totally off balance for months or even years. Good old clean H2O can quench the thirstiest thirst, but sometimes you might need a little something more. Sports drinks are marketed specifically to you, but most of them are worthless, loaded with sugar and artificial colors and a bare minimum of electrolytes.

Try black water. It?s exactly the same ph level as your body, which means that it?s a lot more easily absorbed. It also has a proprietary blend of Fulvic Acid which will help to nourish hard-working muscles and maintain a healthy physical state due to reducing acidity in the body. Fulvic Acid?s small molecular structure allows for the fast absorption of over 77 different trace minerals and elements, powerful electrolytes, antioxidants, and free radical scavengers.

Palin PAC fundraising craters (Politico)

Sarah Palin?s political action committee raised $756,000 in the second half of last year ? a steep drop off from the first half, when she as flirting with a presidential bid.

Palin?s relatively meager second half haul came despite heavy spending on fundraising and a bus tour that fanned speculation she might seek the GOP presidential nomination.

In all, Sarah PAC spent a total $1.2 million, leaving it with about $1 million in the bank, according to a report filed Tuesday with the Federal Election Commission.

Much of the spending went towards a robust direct mail program that cost about $275,000 and was supplemented by an Internet fundraising operation that cost at least $51,000. The bus tour, which took Palin through early primary states including Iowa and New Hampshire, cost at least $79,000, including hotel stays, driver fees and gas.

Palin announced that she was not going to run in early October and, for a while at least, she receded from the political spotlight. She?s recently come to Newt Gingrich?s defense, and her PAC?s report shows that it still maintains a political operation that could allow her to be a force in the presidential or congressional races.

Sarah PAC spent about $400,000 on the consultants who form the core of her small, but devoted staff. New addition Peter Schweizer, who was hired as a foreign policy advisor to replace John McCain holdover Randy Scheunemann, was paid $60,000 in the second six months of the year. Other core Palin staffers include chief of staff Michael Glassner (who was paid $62,000), speechwriter and Palin Internet defender Rebecca Mansour ($48,000), fundraising consultant Tim Crawford ( $93,000), researcher Andrew Davis ($45,000), and conservative coalitions liaison Pam Pryor ($36,000).

While Palin was in Iowa in August during the bus tour, her PAC footed the bill for one of a pair of $600 meals at Des Moines? 801 Chop House, a pricey steakhouse that is a gathering place for political insiders.

Around the same time, the PAC also contributed $5,000 ? its only contribution of the period ?to the Iowa Republican Party, which puts on the Ames Straw Poll, which is held at a fair at which Palin appeared. In October, the PAC spent $2,000 on ?Constitutions? from Washington?s National Archives.

Ancient DNA holds clues to climate change adaptation

ScienceDaily (Jan. 31, 2012) ? Thirty-thousand-year-old bison bones discovered in permafrost at a Canadian goldmine are helping scientists unravel the mystery about how animals adapt to rapid environmental change.

The bones play a key role in a world-first study, led by University of Adelaide researchers, which analyses special genetic modifications that turn genes on and off, without altering the DNA sequence itself. These 'epigenetic' changes can occur rapidly between generations -- without requiring the time for standard evolutionary processes.

Such epigenetic modifications could explain how animal species are able to respond to rapid climate change.

In a collaboration between the University of Adelaide's Australian Centre for Ancient DNA (ACAD) and Sydney's Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute, researchers have shown that it is possible to accurately measure epigenetic modifications in extinct animals and populations.

The team of researchers measured epigenetic modifications in 30,000-year-old permafrost bones from the Yukon region in Canada, and compared them to those in modern-day cattle, and a 30-year-old mummified cow from New Zealand.

Project leader Professor Alan Cooper, Director of ACAD, says: "Epigenetics is challenging some of our standard views of evolutionary adaptation, and the way we think about how animals use and inherit their DNA. In theory, such systems would be invaluable for a wide range of rapid evolutionary adaptation but it has not been possible to measure how or whether they are used in nature, or over evolutionary timescales."

Epigenetics specialist and co-investigator Dr Catherine Suter, from the Victor Chang Institute, has been studying the role of epigenetics in adaptation in laboratory animals. She jumped at the chance to test epigenetic methods in ancient DNA, which had never previously been attempted.

"This is the first step towards testing the idea that epigenetics has driven evolution in natural populations," Dr Suter says.

Professor Cooper says: "The climate record shows that very rapid change has been a persistent feature of the recent past, and organisms would need to adapt to these changes in their environment equally quickly. Standard mutation and selection processes are likely to be too slow in many of these situations."

"Standard genetic tests do not detect epigenetic changes, because the actual DNA sequence is the same," says lead author, ACAD senior researcher Bastien Llamas, an Australian Research Council (ARC) Fellow. "However, we were able to use special methods to show that epigenetic sites in this extinct species were comparable to modern cattle.

"There is growing interest in the potential evolutionary role of epigenetic changes, but to truly demonstrate this will require studies of past populations as they experience major environmental changes," he says.
