Alana Thompson to Star in Toddlers & Tiaras Spinoff

We really wish we were making this up.

But Alana Thompson - a six-year old contestant on Toddlers & Tiaras known as "Honey Boo Boo" - has landed her very own reality show. It will be titled Here Comes Honey Boo Boo and it will consist of six half-hour episodes that provide "an inside look into Alana's world," according to a TLC network statement.

The statement goes on to say that viewers will learn how Thompson "is more than just a Go-Go Juice-drinking beauty queen" and that "when she's not chasing after crowns, Alana's with her family in rural Georgia doing what her family does best: four-wheeling through mud pits and picking up road kill for the family cookout."

Here Comes Honey Boo Boo will also feature Thompson's stay-at-home mom, June Shannon, along with her father, Sugar Bear, and sisters Lauryn "Pumpkin," Jessica "Chubbs," and Anna "Chickadee." Really. That's how they are listed in the press release.

We doubt Vanessa Williams will tune in for this spinoff, but will you?

Low birthrates raise concern | barmitzvahs.biz

Editor?s note: Elisabeth Badinter is the author, most recently, of ?The Conflict: How Modern Motherhood Undermines the Status of Women.? Her three seminal works of feminism ? ?Mother Love: Myth and Reality ? Motherhood in Modern History,? ?Dead End Feminism? and ?XY: On Masculine Identity? — have been translated into 15 languages. For many years, she taught philosophy at the École Polytechnique in Paris, where she lives.

In the lively debate that has followed the American publication of my book ?The Conflict,? much has been said and written about the pros and cons of breastfeeding and mothers staying at home. But this larger issue receives scant attention.

In the United States, where fertility rates remain high, 20% of women are childless, which is twice as many as 30 years ago. There are an estimated 18% in England, 20% in Italy, and between 21% and 26% in Germany. We do not have figures for childless Japanese women, but we do know that Japan has one of the lowest fertility rates in the world, along with Germany, where it hovers at 1.3 children.

Although a minority of women choose not to have children, the trend constitutes a genuine revolution, pointing to some unspoken resistance to motherhood. As we know, as soon as women were able to control reproduction, pursue studies, enter the job market and aspire to financial independence, motherhood stopped being an inevitable, self-evident step and became a choice instead. Whether we like it or not, motherhood is now only one important aspect of women?s identity, no longer the key to achieving a sense of self-fulfillment. And the rate at which women are saying no to children ? most notably among those with college education ? suggests that the choice, for many, threatens the other facets of their identity: their freedom, energy, income and professional accomplishments.

No country can afford to ignore a decline in its birthrate. In the long term, a nation?s pension payments, power and very survival are at stake. To curb the drop in recent decades, some European governments have re-evaluated their family policies. Germany?s example is especially instructive: Although the state?s family policies are now among the most generous in Europe ? a parent who stays home with a child receives 67% of his or her current net income for up to 12 months ? they have failed to boost the birthrate or reverse the figures for childless women.

Germany?s policies provide considerable financial help, but they essentially encourage mothers (recent figures show that only 15% of fathers take advantage of the leave) to quit the work force. Only an astonishing 14% of German mothers with one child in fact resume full-time work. Thus the family policies end up promoting the role of the father-provider, while mothers in effect feel the need to choose between family and work from the moment the first child is born, an especially risky proposition when one in three marriages ends in divorce.

Follow @CNNOpinion on Twitter and join us at Facebook/CNNOpinion.

In this situation, where a high number of mothers are able to stay at home but the birthrate remains exceptionally low, the message is clear: Women do not want policies that serve only to support mothers in their family life. For women to want children, they require policies that support the full range of their needs and roles and ambitions ? maternal, financial, professional.

The varying European experiences show that the highest birthrates exist in the countries with the highest rates of working women. It is, therefore, in society?s interest to support working motherhood, which requires considerable public investment. Generous leave is not, by itself, an incentive. To raise more than one child, a mother must have access to high-quality, full-day child care, but that is still not enough. Income equality, flexible work hours and partners sharing family-related tasks ? these are the essential components that will allow women to be mothers without forgoing their other aspirations.

Tellingly, these are the rallying causes of traditional feminism, more pressing and relevant than ever. It turns out that profound feminist reform, in the workplace and in family policies, might just be what is needed to keep the birthrate from free fall.

The opinions expressed in this commentary are solely those of Elisabeth Badinter.

Specific Medical Treatments Involved in Living Will

The following article presents the very latest information on Living Will. If you have a particular interest in Living Will, then this informative article is required reading.

Living will is a legal document wherein you are giving instructions about medical procedures and treatments you want to receive should you get involved in a life threatening situation. In general, the document could be taken as your wish or request to medical practitioners and healthcare providers in case you get into a condition when you would not be able to speak for yourself or decide whether you like a certain medical procedure to be performed to you.

Of course, as you write your living will, you could not in any way point out and identify what specific medical situations you might get into. You could be involved in a fatal accident or be subject to a homicide attempt. An underlying medical condition might arise or you might suffer from a contagious disease that would leave you incapable or medically unconscious. In any way, you should take a look at specific medical treatments and procedures. It would help if you would discuss with your medical doctor all possible issues and angles regarding your living will.

Here are specific medical procedures or treatments that you could include in your living will. You may wish to specifically receive or not receive these processes. Of course, there are many factors that could cloud your judgment today like the pain involved and the possibility of success. In any way, many people also consider the possible hefty medical costs. Some do not want to undergo specific medical procedures because they do not want their families to incur expensive bills or they do not want their assets to thin out.

Is everything making sense so far? If not, I?m sure that with just a little more reading, all the facts will fall into place.

Mechanical ventilation. If you find it hardest to breathe, there may be a need to undergo a mechanical ventilation or use a breathing machine. The equipment would breathe for you so your life could be prolonged and you could be assisted until you fully recover. Many people do not like the ideas especially because in many cases, people who are forced to breathe through such machines usually do not survive, but only prolong life for some days, weeks, or months. The procedure could be very costly, needless to say.

Resuscitation. This is the process wherein the heart is restarted in case it has stopped pumping up and beating. This is usually administered to people who undergo cardiac death. When writing your living will, determine first the need and the duration for any resuscitation through a cardiopulmonary resuscitation or CPR procedure. There could also be a need for an electric device that would deliver electrical shock to help stimulate heart and make it beat again.

Dialysis. Many people do not like the idea of having to undergo dialysis. This is because once it has started, the person would need to regularly undergo it for life. This procedure is removing wastes from your blood. It is a substitute to the overall function and usefulness of the kidney.

Hydration and nutritional assistance. This basically supplies the human body with necessary fluids and nutrients in an intravenous mode through a tube that would be connected to stomach. The living will could or could not include this procedure, depending on the person?s preferences and decision, based on duration and costs.

How a High School Auto Program Equates to Well-Paying Jobs: Part 1

May 15, 2012 Updated May 15, 2012 at 11:06 PM CDT

DULUTH, MN (Northland's NewsCenter) - A group of four students from the Duluth Public School's automotive program recently earned top honors and thousands of dollars in scholarships at a Skills competition, but what they're learning in the classroom could translate into far more than medals.

The specialized auto program is helping students build solid foundations in high school for well-paying jobs when they graduate.

It's an innovative industry.

"We have cars now that have more computers than took us to the moon in 1969," said Phill Rannala, the automotive tech for ISD 709.

"The computer controls everything pretty much," said senior Kyle Carlson.

It's just one piece of the puzzle students need know to be competitive in the competition.

"We have engine performance and then brakes and suspension and braking and electrical," said Justin Tidodeau, a junior.

The students placed well in competition.

"I placed second place in the main event," said Travis McClarey, a senior.

"Then, I got first in safety," said Carlson.

"We think we came home, between the two students that got scholarships, with about $32,000 worth of scholarships," said Rannala.

While scholarships are a bonus, Rannala says he's focused on preparing students for the workforce.

"We're one of eight districts in the state that provide national certified training," said Jim Arndt, the Principal on Special Assignment.

It's a program requiring a lot of investment, but Rannala says there's a good reason to keep it.

"The money is very, very good in many of the technical fields," said Rannala.

He says the jobs are there, and the auto program curriculum requires him to teach the latest skills to help fill the gap.

"It's actually written and donated to us by the manufacturers of General Motors, Chrysler Corporation, Honda, and Toyota are the biggest creators of this," said Rannala.

The program also gives students credit toward college.

"Up to about 20 credits at Lake Superior College," said Rannala.

"We use federal grants to help support it and we use business partnerships to maintain the program, advice to staff, what we're doing and how we're doing it," said Arndt.

"Many of these expensive tools have been donated to my program," said Rannala.

Business partners also help provide part-time or summer employment for students.

"They go to work under a mentor in a shop setting in a local business," said Rannala.

"I work at Denny's and do a lot of stuff with small engines, "said McClarey.

"The technicians at work have actually helped me a lot too with projects I got going on at home," said Tidodeau.

"Eventually, many of them employ my students," said Rannala.

"There's many kids that have left here now that are making $20 an hour, plus, in the last decade," said Rannala.

Rannala says his program, paired with a two-year degree can equate to even better paying jobs.

"I'm actually going to go to Hibbing community college for diesel mechanics, working on bigger stuff," said McClarey

"The Northshore Mining, there's three students who are working with the maintenance department doing extremely well, salary-wise and also career-wise," said Arndt.

"I think that's the route I'm going into a two-year college," said Tidodeau.

Even with tech careers on the rise, many high school councilors still push students toward four-year degrees.

"That mind-set is still present. It was present when I graduated in 1968. It's still present today, but it is changing...a lot of people still think the pathway to success is a four-year degree, and that's not necessarily true," said Arndt.

Wednesday night, we'll bring you a success story of two brothers who went through Rannala's high school program and moved on to successful careers with a two-year degree.

US-Vietnamese prisoner's wife appeals for US help

The wife of a US citizen held in Vietnam urged Secretary of State Hillary Clinton Tuesday to push for his release, as a senior US official said Hanoi's respect for human rights is deteriorating.

A House of Representatives panel heard the plea from Mai Huong Ngo, the wife of Nguyen Quoc Quan who was reported arrested on April 17 in Ho Chi Minh City.

"I come here to appeal for your assistance in securing my husband's release from arbitrary detention in Vietnam," Mai Huong Ngo told the Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission panel.

Her voice breaking at times during the testimony, Ngo personally appealed to US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and the US ambassador to Hanoi, David Shear, to "call for the immediate release of my husband."

She was due later to meet with Michael Posner, the assistant secretary of state for democracy, human rights and labor who told the commission that Vietnam's "respect for human rights continues to deteriorate."

Ngo said US consular staff have visited her husband once and were due to visit him again at the end of May. She said he needed cooler clothes to make him more comfortable in the hot weather.

State media said Quan, also known as Richard Nguyen, was detained at Tan Son Nhat airport upon "trying to enter Vietnam to instigate a demonstration and undermine celebrations" on the anniversary of the 1975 fall of Saigon.

The Vietnam News Agency (VNA) said he will be detained for four months pending an investigation for the charge of "terrorism against the people's administration," which could lead to the death penalty if convicted.

Communist Vietnam, however, has never executed a foreign citizen for political charges.

The 59-year-old Nguyen, a member of the outlawed Viet Tan Party, received a six-month jail sentence for terror charges and was deported out of Vietnam in May 2008, VNA said.

Viet Tan, the Vietnam Reform Party, describes itself as non-violent and pro-democracy group. Vietnam however labels it as "terrorist."

Posner said Vietnam continues to "unjustly detain and imprison individuals for exercising their basic human rights," estimating the government holds around 100 "prisoners of conscience."

He also charged that there is growing restrictions on the print media, television and the Internet, citing recent decrees that "stifle an already restricted press."

Posner complained about legal provisions that allow the government to target peaceful protesters and outlaw "propaganda," which he said was used against a musician who posted a political song on the internet.

He also said the United States is concerned about harassment of Christian groups and disputes with Buddhist groups, even though Vietnam's constitution guarantees freedom of religion.

Activist Vo Van Ai told the panel that many Americans "believe that the strengthening of US relations with Hanoi means that human rights are improving in Vietnam."

"But this is far from the case," according to the president and founder of Que Me: Action for Democracy in Vietnam.

"The government has pursued a systematic crackdown on freedom of opinion, expression, religion and assembly," he said.

"Arbitrary detention, torture and harassments are the daily lot of citizens who express opinions in contradiction with the ruling Communist Party of Vietnam," he said.

President Barack Obama's administration has frequently urged Vietnam to make progress on human rights but it has nonetheless rapidly expanded relations, which both sides have sought amid the rise of China.

During a speech in Hawaii in November, Clinton said that Vietnam must improve its human rights record if it seeks better relations as the two countries held talks on the issue.

In the world of Computer, the full form of OLAP Server is Online Analytical Processing Server is a new approach to reply multi-dimensional logical queries. Business intelligence has some broader categories. OLAP is a part of the broader categories. OLAP also includes relational reporting and data mining. It has some applications such as business reporting in the area of sales, marketing, management reporting, budgeting and forecasting, financial reporting, business process management and similar fields. It also includes some new application such as agriculture. The term OLAP was developed as a slight change of the traditional database term OLTP (Online Transaction Processing).

Databases which were configured for OLAP Server contain a multidimensional data model for facilitating complex logical and off the cuff queries with a quick implementation time. They remain same in the field of navigation and inheritance databases that are faster than relational databases.

You can see typically the output of an OLAP query in a matrix or spreadsheet format. The scope from the rows and columns of the matrix, the measures from the standards.

An OLAP server is a high-powered, multi-user data management engine and it is especially designed to carry and function on data structures having multi dimensions. A structure having multi-dimensions is set for locating every data item and accessed based on the junction of the dimension members which describe that item. The server design and the structure of the data are optimized for quick off the cuff information recovery in any direction, as well as for swift, stretchy calculation and conversion of raw data based on formulaic associations. It may either physically step the processed multi-dimensional information to deliver steady and quick answer times to end users, or it may fill its data structures in synchronized from relational or other databases, or offer a choice of both. Given the curren t state of technology and the end user necessity for steady and quick answer times, producing the multi-dimensional data in the OLAP Server is often the favorite way.

Carlos Quijada is an IT professional associated with the field since the last 20 years. His core area of ecialization is programming. Besides working with one of the leading IT services, he writes about technology and its benefits, OLAP Server.

scrambls

Facebook includes an option to limit readership of your posts to specific groups, but you have to remember to use it. Other social media sites may not offer similar protection. A scrambls (free) membership lets you take total control of who can read any post. It isn't military-grade encryption, but it works well for simple privacy, as long as all of your friends install it too.

To start using scrambls, you sign up for a free account and download the appropriate browser plug-in. The service currently offers plug-ins for Firefox, Chrome, Safari, and Fennec (Firefox's mobile browser for Android). There's no plug-in for Internet Explorer as yet, but the company is working on it.

The company specifically advertises that scrambls works with Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google+, and Yammer, but it really should work for any social media site. If you discover a site where scrambls doesn't work, the company wants to know about it.

You type your post as usual, but when you send it scrambls replaces the text with a social-media-friendly encrypted version. If you're logged in to scrambls you'll still see the plain-text post. If not, or if you're not authorized to see the post, it looks like gibberish.

Defining Groups
Out of the box, scrambls defines two groups, Everyone and Only Me. A post scrambld for the Everyone group will be visible to any other scrambls user; a post set to Only Me can't be viewed by anyone but you.

You'll probably want to define your own groups to control access. Unfortunately you can't import your friends list from Facebook. The simplest way to define a group is by using a list of email addresses. According to the scrambls site, "We will soon be adding support for other identifiers, such as a Facebook id, as well as the ability to assign multiple identifiers to one account."

Scrambls offers a number of advanced methods for defining a group. You can include entire domains, for example, to keep certain posts accessible only within your company. You can also exclude specific domains or addresses.

One way to avoid entering an endless list of addresses is the shared secret technique. You define a shared secret (basically a passphrase) for the group. Any scrambls user who wants to view posts assigned to this group must enter the passphrase to see the plain text.

Group rules can also determine just when a post can be viewed. You can control the beginning and ending date for viewing of posts to a group, or set posts to become active and expire after a specified time. For business users, there's an option to authenticate users via an external service; setting this up will require help from scrambls tech support.

Your initial choice of group for a post isn't set in stone. At any time you can right-click a scrambld post and choose a different group. Setting a post to the Only Me group effectively hides it from everyone else.

Samsung shows off production 55-inch OLED HDTVs at the 2012 World's Fair

Image

We got an eyeful of Samsung's stunning 55-inch OLED HDTV prototypes earlier this year at CES, but now Samsung is surprising the world by showing off its first mass produced ES9500 models at the World's Fair (which is apparently still a thing?) in Korea. Beyond the Smart Interaction voice and gesture control, Smart Content and Smart Evolution upgradeable dual-core CPU features found in its other high-end HDTVs, Samsung has also built in Smart Dual View technology, which lets users watch two different programs (2D) on one screen at the same time using the set's 3D glasses. Since each pixel is individually lit, Samsung says its OLED tech has 20 percent better color reproduction than existing LED-backlit LCD HDTVs. There's still no word on exactly when these will ship and for how much, however with competition on the way from LG, these fresh-off-the-factory-line flat panels are a sign we won't be waiting long. Other than new display tech, Samsung also took the opportunity to officially announce bigger models on the way in sizes from 60- to 75-inches. Check the galleries below for a few pictures straight from the expo, as well as our shots of the CES display.

The Business of Writing Books | Social Media Explorer

A number of my friends either are, or plan to soon be, writing their first books. I?m really excited for them. I was in their shoes a year ago, plowing through writes, rewrites and edits, putting thoughts on paper and hoping someone out there would think the topic was interesting enough to plop down $24 for a book about it.

All of the folks I?m referring to, in addition to several others, have asked me if writing a book is worth it. While there are few thrills for someone who classifies themselves as a writer more pleasing than seeing your name on a real, hard-bound piece of literature on the shelves of a real bookstore, I thought it appropriate to share a few thoughts with you on the value of writing a book.

The Book-Only Perspective

From a strictly business perspective, and looking at the book project as a singular business venture, writing a book is a horrible idea. This doesn?t mean it?s not worth doing ? keep reading. But the simple math looks like this (based on my experience as well as conversations with other author friends):

  • The average book advance for a first-time author is probably $10,000 to $15,000.
  • The average time it will take you to research and write your first book (assuming it?s a 300-page, business book) is probably about 100 hours.
  • The average time it will take you to edit your first book (same assumptions) is probably about 25 hours.
  • The average time it will take you to plan the marketing and promotions of your first book, including booking speaking gigs and the like, is probably about 10 hours.
  • The average time you will spend on the road promoting and speaking about your first book, provided you want to aggressively sell the bejeezus out of it and perhaps even hit a few best-seller lists, is about another 100 hours (and that?s conservative).
  • So let?s say you get paid a $15,000 advance and put in 235 hours. You?re basically getting paid about $64 per hour.
  • The $15,000 is an advance on your royalties. So you don?t actually get paid more than that until your book sells enough copies to account for $15,000 of your cut. This is probably going to be about 10,000-12,000 books. Most modestly successful business books sell about 5,000-8,000 copies. So, chances are, you?re not going to see a dime beyond the $15,000.

I don?t know about you, but my hourly rate is a bit north of $64. So looking at a book deal alone, it?s a no-brainer: Go do something else.

Bookshelf

Bookshelf (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Honestly, if you self-publish, you can earn far more than the $2.00 or so per book you?ll get with a publishing company. But you don?t have distribution channels like Barnes & Noble, etc., to help you, so you?re sacrificing reach for per-book profit. While many, like Mark Schaefer, have self-published very successfully, I can tell you from personal experience that Scott Stratten could never have texted me from Melbourne, Australia, to say he just saw No Bullshit Social Media in a store had I not been with a legit publisher.

I?m sure Mark and several other self-publishers have made more than $15,000 on their books. But you?re going to need a large online audience and a hell of a topic for your book to be able to hit that number. For me, self-publishing is not a smart route if you don?t have a built-in audience of 50,000 or more blog readers, Twitter followers and the like that can account for buying 5,000 or so books. No, the numbers don?t sound high on what you need to sell, but it?s harder to get people to buy that many than you think.

And depending upon your content, maybe a paid e-book or even a ?report? is a better option. Social Media Explorer is about to launch our first market research report, The Conversation: What Customers Are Saying About Banking. It will be priced at around $300 (for an approximate 100-page report) and focused on a narrow industry. But if we sell just 50 of them, the revenue will greatly exceed what I?ve made from my first book, thus far.

The Book-Plus Perspective

The reason you actually write and publish a book is not to make money from sales. Unless you?re Stephen King. You write and publish a book for credibility. That credibility allows you to charge more for what you did before.

As a social media marketing consultant, my hourly rate increased. As a professional public speaker, my fee increased. In a matter of days (on or around Sept. 15, 2011), my hourly rate jumped $50 per hour (which was conservative ? I could have gone up $150). My speaking fees almost doubled. (I?m still one of the cheapest social media keynote speakers on the market, though.)

As a result, I?ve probably pulled in about $40,000 in additional revenue from September 15, 2011 until now. When you look at that perspective, writing a book is a no-brainer: Write your ass off!

But Honestly ?

The worst thing I could do here is mislead you. There?s a lot more that goes into the Book-Plus perspective than just getting a book published. I know a number of people who have published books who didn?t already have an established presence or professional public speaking career to speak of and, thus, weren?t able to capitalize on the opportunity.

Sure, they raised their rates, but a book alone isn?t going to allow you to go from charging $100 per hour to $200 per hour. You?re going to need a sizable online following or audience, some strong client pedigree and the drive to go after clients willing to pay more for your services. You?re not going to be able to go from charging $2,000 for a speaking engagement to $5,000 without that same sizable audience, some really crisp keynote talks and some word-of-mouth buzz that you?re good at holding a room and delivering a great talk.

Having a book brings you credibility, but it?s not going to close the deal for you. You?re still going to have to be a stud at lots of other things before you can make ?published author? translate to more dollars.

There are lots of other secrets and insights I could share about being an author, the book writing process, the book publishing world and the like. But those are for another time. (Not to mention, I don?t want to make my publisher any more freaked out than they are that I wrote this. Heh.) This gives you what I think is an honest look at what the business of writing a book is really like. Hopefully, it will help you figure out whether or not you want to dive in and get published.

Good luck!

France worries that unsavory presidential campaign has divided country

Nicolas Sarkozy's decision to play to the far right for votes in the presidential election has changed the French political landscape in a way many consider damaging.

Creating a small sensation on the eve of French presidential elections, Francois Bayrou ? a candidate himself until a few weeks ago ? announced he would vote for Socialist Francois Hollande in elections tomorrow.?The "centrist" said that although he?disagrees with Mr. Hollande?s economic platform, the national unity that the frontrunner stresses is more important.?

Bayrou's move underscores what has become a central issue in French elections: the divisive atmosphere of the campaign and the rise of speech that often stigmatizes minorities.? And his support is not insignificant, as he scored 9 percent of votes in the first round.

The rise of the far right has forced President Nicolas Sarkozy to fish ardently in waters previously considered forbidden in polite society for a chance at re-election. He needs the voters of Marine Le Pen, the anti-Islam anti-Europe, nationalist, far-right candidate who defied expectations in the first round, scoring 18 percent of the vote.

At his May 1 rally in Paris, Sarkozy spoke as the champion of ?real labor? ? veiled words of approbation for those on welfare, or without jobs. His team earlier leaked a false rumor that challenger Francois Hollande was the favorite of ?700 mosques? in France. He has described someone in public as ?someone who looks like a Muslim? and has legitimized the far-right by encouraging their vote.

Much has been made in this election campaign about the personal dislike French feel for Sarkozy's flamboyant style. But the longer term issue for France, now being raised by figures on both the left and the traditional right, is his ongoing appeal to base instincts and voters' fears.

Articulating his reason for backing Hollande, which has caused outrage among some in his camp,?Bayrou said today, "The line that Nicholas Sarkozy chose is violent. It is in contradiction to our values and Gaullist values as well as those of the republicans and the social right.?

Unsurprisingly, the left has been critical as well, coining the term ?Sarkozyism? to describe antagonizing techniques that create divisions among different sections of society. It is a ?technique which consists of pitting the French against one another,? as Paul Quil?s, a former Socialist minister, has said.

G. Dep Sentenced To 15 Years To Life For Murder

Former Bad Boy rapper was found guilty of killing a man in a botched robbery attempt nearly two decades ago.
By Jesse Gissen

NEW YORK — Arriving in court wearing all black to match the solemn occasion, G. Dep (born Trevell Coleman) was met by his family, friends and loved ones. The ex-Diddy protégé remained reserved as the prosecution recommended that the judge give Dep the mandatory minimum sentence of 15 years to life after Coleman was found guilty of killing a man named John Henkel in a botched robbery attempt nearly two decades ago.

The Harlem MC made headlines in 2010 after he confessed — unprovoked — that he had committed the crime in a surprising admission to police at Manhattan's 25th precinct. At the time, Dep said he longed to clear his conscience.

The prosecution took this factor into account when asking Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Michael Obus for the minimum sentence, saying if it weren't for Coleman, they never would have been able to solve the crime. "This case was as closed as a case could be," Manhattan Assistant District Attorney David Drucker reminded the court.

Dep's attorney, Anthony L. Ricco, mirrored those same sentiments in his final statement to the judge. "The first step towards rehabilitation [is] the recognition that the individual [has] done something wrong and their willingness to put themselves forward to take recognition for it," he said. "Trevell Coleman did this."

Given the odd nature of the case, Obus commended Coleman before announcing his sentence.

"I'm sure there are people that are second-guessing your decision [to confess to the crime], and there will be people that will second-guess it," he told Dep. "Perhaps it wasn't the best legal strategy, but certainly it was the right thing to do, even though it landed you in the position that you are in now."

While Dep declined to comment during the sentencing, MTV News spoke to him days after the jury found him guilty of the crime and he seemed at peace with the verdict.

"However it went down, it was just one of them things where I knew I was facing some type of charge, so whatever the verdict was, I knew it was God's will," he said over the phone from Rikers Island. "You know, someone was taken from [the Henkel] family, so I can't feel like I was robbed in any kind of way. I just want to thank everyone that was involved in the case. I don't have no ill thoughts towards anybody."

G. Dep signed to Diddy's Bad Boy Records in 1998 and went on to release his debut LP, Child of the Ghetto, in 2001. The record spawned two well-received singles, "Let's Get It" and "Special Delivery," but Dep's rap career failed to take off. By 2003, he had parted ways with Bad Boy. Coleman took another stab at the industry, dropping a mixtape the following year, but his various arrests and battles with drug abuse thwarted those efforts.

Dep's lawyer, Anthony L. Ricco, is currently working on an appeal.
