Report: Pentagon must overhaul its MIA effort

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Pentagon's efforts to find and identify troops missing in action from past conflicts are undermined by leadership weaknesses, infighting and other problems that jeopardize the mission, according to a new audit released Wednesday.

In response, the office of Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said it will consider a recommended overhaul that could include a streamlined chain of command.

Members of Congress demanded quick action.

"We're going to get to the bottom of this," said Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo. "The problems plaguing our efforts to recover our POW and MIA service members are systemic and seem to extend even beyond the problems identified in this report."

Sen. Kelly Ayotte, R-N.H., called for an urgent hearing of the Senate Armed Services Committee to investigate.

Rep. Jackie Speier, D-Calif., and a bipartisan group of House members have called for an investigation by the Pentagon's inspector general.

At issue is the effectiveness of the MIA accounting mission, which is overseen by a Pentagon policy organization but executed largely by a Hawaii-based military command known as the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command. Their mission is to account for as many as possible of the 83,000 service members missing from World War II and the wars in Vietnam and Korea.

Wednesday's report by the Government Accountability Office echoes in some respects the criticisms cited in an internal Pentagon study disclosed last week by The Associated Press in which key elements of the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command, or JPAC, were called "dysfunctional." In response to the AP report the Pentagon ordered a "second look" at the study, which was suppressed by the JPAC commander at the time.

The Pentagon said on Tuesday that it has set no deadline for completing its review of the study.

Ayotte, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, called the GAO report deeply troubling.

"Coming on the heels of last week's Associated Press story describing similar problems, it underscores the urgent need for the committee to hear directly from JPAC officials about these disturbing findings and to ensure proper steps are being taken to address these problems," she wrote in a letter to the committee's leaders.

Wednesday's report was done in response to a request by Congress last year and was 12 months in the making. It concluded that the MIA accounting mission, while making "some progress," is being "undermined by longstanding leadership weaknesses and a fragmented organizational structure."

In 2009 the Congress demanded that the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command accelerate its work so that by 2015 it is identifying at least 200 MIAs per year. That compares with an average of 72 per year over the past decade.

The GAO report said the Pentagon's work on a plan for achieving the 200-per-year target is still incomplete, "due to a fragmented approach to planning and disputes among" the various agencies that share responsibility for the mission. Last year JPAC reported making 80 identifications of MIA remains.

"Collectively, these weaknesses jeopardize (the Pentagon's) capability and capacity to accomplish the statutory goals of accounting for missing persons and to provide some measure of closure to those families whose loved ones are stilling missing as a result of their service to their country," the GAO report said.

The report recommended that the Pentagon consider reorganizing its MIA accounting bureaucracy to create a more effective chain of command and to clarify the roles and responsibilities of the groups that perform the work.

It also cited a failure by the Pentagon to prioritize its remains recovery missions on former battlefields and to determine how many recoveries it can reasonably expect. This "further hinders the department's overall progress to achieve its mission," it said.

In a response letter, the Pentagon's policy chief, James N. Miller, wrote that he agreed with the main points in the GAO report. He vowed to fix the problems, but he also indicated that Defense Department budget reductions, which could total $52 billion next year, may limit the Pentagon's progress.

When You Are the Partner of a Sex Addict, Part 1 | World of ...

When You Are the Partner of a Sex Addict, Part 1When you find out that your partner has been unfaithful, it is normal to have very intense feelings of betrayal, anger, and profound sadness. Questions arise about anything and everything that the offending party has ever said or done.

Positive memories together and special moments lose their magic. Feelings of inadequacy can arise; worries that you somehow caused your partner to seek sexual experiences elsewhere due to your not being ?enough? can cut to the very core of your being.

Well-meaning friends and relatives advise you to leave the relationship. Sometimes even your therapist tells you to leave the relationship.

But what if you find out that this is a pervasive pattern for your partner? What if you discover that your partner might be a sex addict?

Sex addiction is believed to be somewhat similar to a drug or alcohol addiction. When a person has a pathological relationship with a mood-altering substance that trumps key relationships, we call this an addiction. So it is with sex addiction.

Referred to as a process or behavioral addiction, the neurological processes that a sex addict experiences parallels those of an addict who introduces substances into their system. All addicts lead a double life ? the persona that they show the world, and the secret of their addiction. Paired with distorted thought patterns and impaired thinking, addicts often rationalize and deny that there is a problem. They minimize behaviors and blame others.

As a partner of an addict, it is very important to gain support from a therapist who is familiar with sex addiction and the addictive cycle. It is also key to attend a 12-step meeting for co-addicts such as COSA, or a partner?s therapy group, in order to gather insight and wisdom about your situation by connecting to peers who are in the same situation. You will need a great deal of support from people in the know regarding sex addiction to help you weather this crisis in your life, and make decisions about whether leaving the relationship or staying in it is the right choice for you.

With therapeutic treatment and by working hard at a 12-step program such as SAA, sex addicts do have the ability to heal the underlying issues that form the basis for their addictive behaviors. As a partner of a sex addict, you will need to get support for what you are going through.

So now that you know what sex addiction is, and that as a partner, getting resources for yourself to help you through this difficult time is crucial, what next?

After containing the crisis, and when you are on stable ground, looking at your family of origin issues, as well as addressing unhealthy dynamics that are in place in the relationship can be very helpful in moving forward with your life. This is a difficult subject, because partners of addicts sometimes face incredible stigma from society, as well as their own feelings of doubt about themselves.

A term like ?co-addict? can bring up some very strong feelings for partners, and many partners want nothing to do with the addict?s recovery because they understandably feel like this is not their problem. Yet, statistics and experience prove that the couples who work through the recovery process together are the couples who are most likely to stay together.

Adherence to Cancer Screening Guidelines and Predictors of Improvement Among Participants in the Kansas State Employee Wellness Program

Notes: INTRODUCTION: Employee wellness programs (EWPs) have been used to implement worksite-based cancer prevention and control interventions. However, little is known about whether these programs result in improved adherence to cancer screening guidelines or how participants' characteristics affect subsequent screening. This study was conducted to describe cancer screening behaviors among participants in a state EWP and identify factors associated with screening adherence among those who were initially nonadherent. METHODS: We identified employees and their dependents who completed health risk assessments (HRAs) as part of the Kansas state EWP in both 2008 and 2009. We examined baseline rates of adherence to cancer screening guidelines in 2008 and factors associated with adherence in 2009 among participants who were initially nonadherent. RESULTS: Of 53,095 eligible participants, 13,222 (25%) participated in the EWP in 2008 and 6,205 (12%) participated in both years. Among the multiyear participants, adherence was high at baseline to screening for breast (92.5%), cervical (91.8%), and colorectal cancer (72.7%). Of participants who were initially nonadherent in 2008, 52.4%, 41.3%, and 33.5%, respectively, became adherent in the following year to breast, cervical, and colorectal cancer screening. Suburban/urban residence and more frequent doctor visits predicted adherence to breast and colorectal cancer screening guidelines. CONCLUSION: The effectiveness of EWPs for increasing cancer screening is limited by low HRA participation rates, high rates of adherence to screening at baseline, and failure of nonadherent participants to get screening. Improving overall adherence to cancer screening guidelines among employees will require efforts to increase HRA participation, stronger interventions for nonadherent participants, and better access to screening for rural employees.

Biographies of 3 Chinese SF airliner crash victims

The three victims of the July 6 crash of Asiana Airlines Flight 214 in San Francisco were teenage girls who attended the same school in eastern China:

---

Liu Yipeng, 15, has been described as a standout student in math, physics and essay writing, as well as a fan of video games. Like the other two victims, she was a student at the Jiangshan Middle School in the relatively wealthy eastern province of Zhejiang and had been traveling to the U.S. to attend a summer camp, visit college campuses and do some sightseeing. Such tours are well beyond the means of most Chinese, but have become popular among the newly emerging middle class as a way of improving their children's English and preparing them for possible enrollment in an American college. Photos posted by Liu's friends show her holding a microphone and addressing the camera at her school's student television station. Liu and her schoolmates are examples of China's urban "Post-'90s" generation, born into prosperity and security but likely to be single children who are under intense pressure from parents and teachers to excel academically. Liu died Friday after being hospitalized with severe head and abdominal injuries sustained in the crash.

---

Wang Linjia, 16, was a star student in physics and calligraphy and was described by neighbors as quiet, courteous and hardworking. Confident and popular, she would interview her classmates as part of her work as a student reporter and served as class monitor for three years. Her father proudly displayed her calligraphy and artwork on the walls of his office. The final posting on her microblog account read: "Give yourself some affirmation, you're stronger than you think. It's only called youth because it's painful. I always feel like there's not enough time, yet I have no idea where my time goes." Wang was among a group of injured passengers who didn't get immediate medical help. Rescuers didn't spot her until 14 minutes after the crash, finding her along with three flight attendants who were flung onto the tarmac but survived the crash.

Ye Mengyuan, 16, was a champion athlete who excelled at literature, playing the piano, singing and public speaking. Her given name means "wish come true" in Chinese. Ye was Wang's close friend, and cellphone pictures posted online by friends show the two girls dressed in their school's track suit uniforms, smiling and mugging for the cameras. Local media reports said she had recently won a national aerobics competition and routinely received honors at the school's annual speech contests. Footage released by state broadcaster CCTV after her death showed Ye playing piano at an event earlier this year, dressed in a polka dot skirt with her hair done up in a neat bun. Ye had been badly injured in the crash, then covered on the runway in flame-retardant foam and hit by a fire truck speeding to the crash site. Her exact cause of death wasn't clear.

Washington Nationals (47-47) at Miami Marlins (35-57), 1:10 p.m. (ET)

Henderson Alvarez makes his third start of the season since coming off the disabled list and will try to help the Miami Marlins complete a three-game series sweep of the Washington Nationals.

A whitewash would be some consolation to a horrible first half of the season for the Marlins, who have won their last three contests.

Alvarez is coming off a 6-4 loss to the Braves on Tuesday at Marlins Park as he allowed five runs -- four earned -- over six innings. The right-hander, who was on the 60-day disabled list earlier this season due to right shoulder inflammation, has faced the Nationals just once before. That came in a Blue Jays uniform on June 12, 2012 when he suffered a loss.

Taylor Jordan, a native of Merritt Island, Fla. and a Brevard Community College alum, gets his first career start in the Sunshine State. The righty, who will make his fourth big league start, has thrown 5 2/3 innings in each of his previous two appearances. That includes a loss at Philadelphia on Tuesday.

Last night, Ed Lucas beat out a potential inning-ending double-play grounder to score Adeiny Hechavarria from third in the bottom of the 10th to cap a 2-1 Miami win.

Steve Cishek (3-4) was credited with the win. The right-hander pitched his way out of the 10th inning after putting runners on second and third with one out.

Giancarlo Stanton hit a home run to left field off closer Rafael Soriano in the bottom of the ninth inning to tie the game. It was Soriano's first blown save since May 21 against the San Francisco Giants.

"I never think homer," Stanton said. "You may swing harder in some counts, so whatever, whatever. But I had two strikes, so that was more, 'Get the barrel on the ball.' It was still a ball, but I got my hands to it. That's thing. If the ball is up and you get your hands to it, it's going to go if you get on top of it."

Dan Haren pitched six strong innings in his best outing of the season. The right-hander lost seven consecutive decisions in his last nine starts, but surrendered three hits with one walk, while striking out seven batters in a no-decision for the Nats.

Ryan Zimmerman went 2-for-5 for the Nationals, who only have one victory six games into this seven-game road trip.

All-Star Jose Fernandez started the game for the Marlins. The right-hander gave up one run on four hits with three walks and four strikeouts. The only run he allowed in six innings of work came in the top of the fourth inning when a Jayson Werth sacrifice fly scored Bryce Harper.

The Nationals lead the season series, 5-3.

Overnight:

A big time heat wave is in store for the upcoming week, our first full week of 90 degree + days and for a large part of the week, upper 90s look likely. Factor in the humidity and heat indices; ?feels like? values could approach 105? to 110?! We will not really be able to count much on a cooling afternoon shower other than a slight possibility Tuesday or Wednesday, as a strong high pressure will settle overhead. Best shower chances will be west along the slopes of the mountains. A cold front by next weekend may yield the greatest chance for scattered thundershowers, although timing is not ideal. But even then temperatures will remain in the 90s. Stay cool, hydrate, do not over exert yourself ? it will be a tough stretch. Try and have a great day!

China economic slowdown seen deepening as Beijing pushes reform

By Langi Chiang and Jonathan Standing

BEIJING (Reuters) - China's GDP growth is expected to have slowed down in the second quarter as weak overseas demand weighs on output and investment, providing a test for Beijing's resolve to revamp the world's second-biggest economy in the face of deteriorating data.

Second-quarter GDP figures are due to be published on Monday along with other indicators, including industrial output and retail sales for June.

A Reuters poll of forecasts by economists projected China's economy grew 7.5 percent in the April-June quarter from a year earlier, slowing from 7.7 percent in January-March.

However, trade figures last week showing an unexpected fall in exports for the first time in 17 months raised market concerns GDP could be weaker than expected.

New Premier Li Keqiang has been prominent in pushing for economic reform over fast-line growth, suggesting the government is in no rush to offer fresh stimulus to revive an economy in a protracted slowdown. Before Monday's figures, growth had already slowed in eight of the last nine quarters.

"I'm sticking to our forecast of 7.5 percent Q2 growth, but there is rising downside risk," said Zhiwei Zhang, chief China economist with Nomura in Hong Kong.

The government's official growth target for 2013 is 7.5 percent, impressive by world standards but it would be the slowest pace in 23 years for China.

Analysts have cut their forecasts for 2013 full-year growth in recent weeks following a run of weak data and government comments on slowing growth. But they mostly remain between 7 and 7.5 percent.

Last week, customs data showed China's exports fell 3.1 percent in June against forecasts for a rise of 4 percent, while imports dipped 0.7 percent versus an expected 8.0 percent rise. The customs administration added that the outlook for July to September was "grim.

Other figures had shown factory-gate deflation persisted for a 16th straight month, backing the view that the economy, plagued by industrial overcapacity, is losing momentum.

Annual consumer inflation accelerated more than expected in June, but remained subdued at 2.7 percent, below Beijing's annual target of 3.5 percent.

The main worry for China's leaders is if the economic slowdown leads to high unemployment that could spark social unrest. So far government officials say employment is stable.

So for now economists do not see any major stimulus or policy shift and instead expect the government to tough out the slowdown as they pursue a longer-term vision of reforming the economy towards consumer-led, rather than export- and investment-led growth.

Beijing is still cleaning up trillions of dollars in local government debt left over from its last spending spree during the 2008/2009 global financial crisis, while trying to rein in off-balance-sheet loans.

"The focus is still on reforms. The chances of a cut in interest rates or banks' reserve ratio look slim," said Xu Hongcai, senior economist at the China Centre for International Economic Exchanges (CCIEE), a think-tank in Beijing.

"Previously, when the economy was not good, local officials held out their hands for money from the central government. But now they have to embrace reforms as no money will be given."

Dreamliner fire not caused by battery fault, says U.K. agency

LONDON (AP) ? A fire on an empty Boeing 787 plane at London's Heathrow Airport didn't appear to be caused by faulty aircraft batteries, a British investigative agency said Saturday.

Investors in Boeing, which calls its newest plane a Dreamliner, had feared that Friday's blaze meant that a battery overheating problem that grounded the whole fleet of such planes in January had not been fixed. News of the fire on the Ethiopian Airlines plane sent Boeing shares down 4.7 percent on Friday.

But Britain's Air Accidents Investigation Branch said there was "no evidence of a direct causal relationship" between the Dreamliner's batteries and the fire.

"There has been extensive heat damage in the upper portion of the rear fuselage, a complex part of the aircraft ... it is clear that this heat damage is remote from the area in which the aircraft main and APU (Auxiliary Power Unit) batteries are located," the agency said in a statement.

Ethiopian Airlines said it is continuing to operate its fleet of 787s despite the investigation, which will take at least several more days to be completed.

The airline's chief executive, Tewolde Gebremariam, told The Associated Press on Saturday that there is "no flight safety issue" with the 787s and that Ethiopian Airlines, like other operators, hasn't made changes regarding the planes.

Friday's fire broke out more than eight hours after the plane landed at Heathrow Airport. The aircraft was parked on a remote parking stand with no one onboard when smoke was detected from it, Ethiopian Airlines said.

Although the incident caused no injuries, it forced Heathrow, one of the world's busiest airports, to close its runways for nearly an hour. Arrivals and departures were briefly suspended, delaying hundreds of passengers' journeys.

The fire also drew renewed attention to the future of Boeing's most technologically-advanced airliner. Boeing, based in Chicago, marketed the 787 as a revolutionary jet which burns 20 percent less fuel than comparable aircraft, thanks to its lightweight design.

In another first, the plane relies on rechargeable lithium-ion batteries to start its auxiliary power unit, which provides power on the ground or if the main engines quit. But problems with those batteries led to the grounding earlier this year of the 50 Dreamliners flying at the time.

In January, the Dreamliner was grounded for months following two incidents relating to overheating lithium-ion batteries on separate planes. One 787 caught fire shortly after it landed at Boston's Logan International Airport on Jan. 7.

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration eventually approved a plan by Boeing to better insulate the battery's eight cells and the addition of a new containment and venting system. Once the changes were made, the planes started to fly again.

Ethiopian Airlines was the first airline to resume using the 787, with a flight on April 27 from Ethiopia's capital of Addis Ababa to Nairobi, Kenya.

The airline is helping with the investigation of Friday's fire, together with Boeing, Britain's AAIB, the FAA and the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board.

Sony Almost Joined Forces with SEGA for the PlayStation

Alternate history

SEGA PlayStation

It?s a well-known fact that the PlayStation started life as an add-on for the Super NES. Sony and Nintendo didn?t see eye-to-eye, though, and the latter stabbed its would-be ally in the back by announcing a partnership with Philips. However, before opting to go it alone, the manufacturer actually tried to strike a deal with SEGA.

"Sony came to us after it had been rebuffed by Nintendo," said SEGA of America?s former CEO Tom Kalinske as part of an interview with MCV. ?Olaf Olafsson [Sony Electronic Publishing President] and Micky Schulhof [President of Sony America] came to my office and said, 'Tom, we really don?t like Nintendo. You don?t like Nintendo. We have this little studio down in Santa Monica [Imagesoft] working on video games, we don?t know what to do with it, [and] we?d like SEGA?s help in training our guys. And we think that the optical disc will be the best format.'"

Fascinatingly, SEGA actually agreed, and it formed a developer called Digital Pictures, which went on to produce several full-motion video titles such as Night Trap, Sewer Shark, and Supreme Warrior. ?Our relationship with Sony was very close and very tight,? continued Kalinske. "Together, we worked a lot of things out. And SEGA of America and Sony were both convinced that the next platforms had to use optical discs.?

"That?s a stupid idea, Sony doesn?t know how to make hardware. Why would we want to do this?"

Sony worked closely with SEGA?s engineers in North America, coming up with some specifications for an optical-based hardware system. And this resulted in a trip to Sony?s headquarters in Tokyo, where PlayStation creator Ken Kutaragi had a proposal for Kalinske. ?He said that [the hypothetical system] was great, and as we all lose money on hardware, let's jointly market a single system ? the SEGA/Sony hardware system ? and whatever loss that we make, we split that loss,? he explained.

All that Kalinske had to do was convince the people at the top of SEGA?s board ? but they were having none of it. ?They basically turned me down,? remembered the ex-industry veteran. ?They said: ?That?s a stupid idea, Sony doesn?t know how to make hardware. They don?t know how to make software either. Why would we want to do this?? That is what caused the division between SEGA and Sony, and caused Sony to become our competitor and launch its own hardware platform.?

And it prompted the genesis of a fall out between Kalinske and his superiors in Japan, too. The PlayStation maker capitalised upon that, poaching key personnel such as SEGA of America?s second-in-command Steve Race. It then went on to crush the SEGA Saturn commercially, a platform that few outside of Japan even believed in. ?We were in this very uncomfortable position trying to launch this new hardware system, a system that I didn?t like,? the former gaffer sighed.

Kalinske eventually quit SEGA and retired from the industry in 1996. ?I had four years where SEGA Japan pretty much let me do whatever I wanted, and then this series of events happened where they didn?t, and that?s why I ended up leaving the company,? he concluded. We wonder if the firm regrets its decision now.

MONT-SAINT-MICHEL, France (AP) ? German rider Tony Martin won the 11th stage of the Tour de France and second-placed Chris Froome finished way ahead of his main rivals to significantly improve his overall lead on Wednesday.

As the two-time world time trial champion, Martin did not disappoint over the 20.5-mile route in Normandy from Avranches to the medieval walled city of Mont-Saint-Michel.

Froome was faster over the first two time splits but slowed down in the last section and rolled in 12 seconds slower than Martin, who won in just over 36 minutes.

"My biggest race today was with the other GC riders," Froome said. "I've extended my lead today so I'm very happy with that. Hats off to Tony Martin for winning that stage, it just goes to show what class he has."

Froome was the only rider to get within a minute of Martin, with Belgian Thomas De Gendt 1:01 behind in third.

While Martin is not a Tour challenger, others who are supposed to be slipped further behind.

Alejandro Valverde and two-time former champion Alberto Contador were two minutes or more behind Froome, and 2010 champ Andy Schleck and 2011 champ Cadel Evans lost massive time.

Valverde remained in second place overall but is 3:25 back. Contador improved to fourth but is 3:54 behind.

"I'm happy with my shape," Froome said. "I think I've shown in the mountains that I can hold my own, and time trial also.

Contador looked stern-faced and tense when he prepared to start. The Spaniard finished in 15th place, 2:15 behind Martin; Evans was 2:30 slower and Schleck finished 4:44 behind Martin.

"No one's won the Tour de France yet and no one's lost it. We have to get to Paris yet," Contador said. "It's true that Chris Froome is in impressive form and is a great climber, but there are still many stages left."

Even though Evans is 6:54 behind Froome in 14th place, he has not given up.

"I couldn't get the best out of myself," the Australian said. "I think we will get a few chances, and in the last four days (of the race) we will give everything."

Martin was lucky to still be in the race after losing consciousness on his team bus after his crash in the opening stage. It was so bad that his left lung was bruised and layers of skin were shredded off his back, preventing him from sleeping properly for several nights.

"It's pretty much OK. There are still some deeper wounds that are left to heal, but it's not that painful anymore like directly after the crash," Martin said. "(Today) the feeling was good. I was just focused on the race. It was more or less like every time trial."

Martin won the penultimate stage of the 2011 Tour, an undulating time trail in Grenoble. He also finished second behind Bradley Wiggins in the time trial at the Olympic Games last year in London.

The ride Wednesday started in Avranches, whose website dates the town's origins to Celts in the 9th century B.C. It ended at the breathtaking island citadel of Mont-Saint-Michel, a World Heritage site because of the Gothic-style Benedictine abbey erected between the 11th and 16th centuries.

However, riding at an average speed of 34 mph in humid conditions, there was little time for Martin to take in the sights.

Mark Cavendish had an eventful day ? but for the wrong reasons.

Cavendish's team said it believes someone threw urine at the British rider.

"Yes, that's true I think. I was behind him. I didn't see it, but I think it's true," the team press officer Alessandro Tegner said.

Tegner said the liquid smelled like urine and it was "all over him." He added Cavendish talked about it after the time trial.

"That's really disappointing to hear," Froome said. "To do something disrespectful like that is really sad and ruins the whole atmosphere."

The 12th stage Thursday is one of two consecutive flat days for sprinters, taking the riders on a 135.5-mile route from Fougeres to Tours in the Loire valley.

The climbers will face a medium mountain stage on Saturday and daunting ascent of Mont Ventoux on Sunday.

SANFORD, Fla. (AP) ? An expert on gunshot wounds hired by the defense testified Tuesday that George Zimmerman's account of how he fatally shot Trayvon Martin is consistent with the forensic evidence.

Dr. Vincent Di Maio said that the trajectory of the bullet and gun powder on Martin's body support Zimmerman's version that Martin was on top of him when Zimmerman fired his gun into Martin's chest. The gun's muzzle was against Martin's clothing and it was anywhere from two to four inches from Martin's skin, he said.

"This is consistent with Mr. Zimmerman's account that Mr. Martin was over him, leaning forward at the time he was shot," said Di Maio, the former chief medical examiner in San Antonio.

The pathologist also said it was likely Martin was conscious for 10 to 15 seconds after the shooting as a reserve supply of oxygen ran out of his body, and during that time it was possible for him to have moved his arms. Zimmerman's account that he had placed Martin's arms out to his sides after the shooting contradicts a photo taken after the shooting that shows Martin's arms under his body. Defense attorneys contend Martin moved his arms.

Di Maio also explained that if clothes taken into evidence are wet and packaged in plastic bags, and not paper bags, it can ruin the samples since "bacteria multiplies and you get mold and it stinks to high heaven." Defense attorneys believe DNA evidence found on Martin's hooded sweatshirt and undershirt was degraded since the clothing wasn't packaged properly.

Earlier in the morning, Judge Debra Nelson considered prosecutors' request to bar the defense from showing animation depicting the fight between Martin and Zimmerman. Nelson held an evidence hearing with jurors out of the courtroom, but ultimately postponed her decision and more arguments on the matter until later in the afternoon.

Prosecutors object to the animation, saying it isn't an accurate depiction.

Defense attorneys called the man who created the animation to testify. To recreate the fight, Daniel Schumaker went to the crime scene and had employees in motion-capture suits re-enact what happened based on coroner photographs, police reports, the coroner's report, witness depositions and photos taken by responding police officers, he said.

The fight took place on a dark, rainy night in February 2012 and there were no eyewitnesses who saw the entire fight. Several witnesses saw and heard parts of the struggle that left Martin dead with a bullet in his heart.

Testimony in previous days has focused on a 911 call that captures screams from the struggle between Martin and Zimmerman.

Convincing the jury of who was screaming for help on the tape has become the primary goal of prosecutors and defense attorneys because it would help jurors evaluate Zimmerman's self-defense claim. Relatives of Martin's and Zimmerman's have offered conflicting opinions about who is heard screaming.

Zimmerman's mother and uncle testified last Friday it was Zimmerman screaming, while Martin's mother and brother also took the witness stand last Friday to say the voice belongs to Martin. Martin's father testified Monday that he initially couldn't tell if the screams came from his son, but later decided they did.

Zimmerman himself once said during a police interview that the screams didn't sound like him, though he and his family later said the screams were his.

Zimmerman has pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder and says he shot Martin in self-defense during a scuffle in the townhome complex where he lived. Martin was there visiting his father and his father's fiancee.
