Weekly Security Update | Iraq Business News

Weekly Security Update

By Gary Sandiford, Olive Group?s Dubai based assessments manager.? Olive Group is a leading provider of security and technology solutions and has operated continuously in Iraq since 2003.

?

Overview

Olive Groups Iraq statistics are drawn from multiple sources, including media reporting and direct liaison with in country assets. Included within the statistics are a minority sub-set of serious incidents which may not be purely attributable to insurgent/terrorist groups, such as murder, kidnappings and organised crime activities.

The total number of reported incidents in Iraq for the period 22 ? 28 October 2012 was 115.? This figure sits just below the 2012 weekly average of 116 and is a significant reduction on last week?s figure of 144.? Despite this decrease in incidents, there were a number of high-profile mass-casualty attacks on the 26 and 27 October, likely intended to coincide with the Eid al-Adha period.? However, concerns over the potential for a series of nationwide spectacular attacks did not materialise.? The geographical spread of this week?s activity was in line with activity seen over the previous months, with the north, north-central (less the KRG) and Baghdad areas experiencing the greatest proportion of the incidents.? The southern areas of the country again witnessed low levels of violence.? The next significant date in the Iraqi calendar is the Islamic New Year in mid-November.? While the security focus remains on significant dates and events, the possibility of another series of nationwide attacks outside of specific high profile dates and events cannot be discounted.

Nexus 7 sales clocking in at close to a million per month

DNP It's official, Nexus 7 sales clocking in at close to a million a month

While it was pretty clear that ASUS' Google-partnered Nexus 7 contributed heavily to the Taiwanese maker's healthy Q3 results, there was no official confirmation on its exact sales figures so far. ASUS CFO David Chang has now come clean and told the WSJ that the 7-incher is close to touching the one million per month mark, just about double the rate of sales at its launch. While this number is a fraction of the iPad's sales (14 million in the last quarter alone), it could well go up due to the recent price drop and the addition of new 32GB models to the portfolio. On the flip side, the Nexus 7 is sure to face heat from close rivals, the Kindle Fire HD and the 7.9-inch Apple iPad mini, while the mega-spec Nexus 10 will also entice some buyers away from ASUS' reach.

Meet SnagFilms Filmmakers: Can We Govern Ourselves? New Doc ...

Despite numerous countries fighting for their freedoms, there are many entities today that exemplify autonomy. British documentarian Ivo Gormley's new documentary "Us Now" explores various real examples of self-government around the globe. The film is available to view now on SnagFilms (and below).

What it's really about: "In a world in which information is like air, what happens to power? 'Us Now' is a documentary film project about the power of mass collaboration, government and the Internet. It is a description of a world going through the greatest social change since the invention of the printing press. 'Us Now' tells the stories of online networks that are challenging the existing notion of hierarchy. For the first time, it brings together the fore-most thinkers in the field of collaborative governance to describe the future of government. 'Us Now' takes a look at how the internet could allow us to do away with politicians and run the government ourselves. It tells the stories of the online networks whose radical self-organising structures threaten to change the fabric of government for ever. If distributed networks of people can run complex organisations such as football clubs, what else can they do? 'Us Now' follows the fate of Ebbsfleet United; a football club owned and run by its fans, Zopa; a bank in which everyone is the manager,?and Couch surfing; a vast online network whose members share their homes with strangers. The founding principals of these projects; transparancy, self-selection, open-participation, are coming closer and closer to the mainstream of our social and political lives. 'Us Now' describes this transition and confronts politicians George Osborne and Ed Milliband with the possibilities for collaborative government as described by Don Tapscott and Clay Shirky amongst others.

On the influence of anthropology: "I studied anthropology and always took photos. So travelling around and documenting things was always what I did, I started filming things with my dad's video camera as soon as I could and

"Many films are polemics or about how everything's going wrong in the world. Hopefully this is a credible argument for how we could all lead more fulfilling lives."

started editing things together when I was about 17. In those days we could only fit about 10mins of SD footage on the computer. But it felt amazingly exciting to be able to manipulate the footage and then spit it back out on to DV tape. I like being able to go to a place explore it for the first time with the video camera, the camera almost justifying your strange questions and presence in some situations, and then to be able to have a document of it that you can show the rest of the world."

What inspired you to make this film? "I felt like I was from a generation that was taught about how socialism had failed, but was witnessing the failure of global capitalism to allocate resources effectively. It seemed there was no credible ideology available to me. The first time I saw Wikipedia I was utterly amazed. It seemed to me to be proof of human's ability to collaborate through disagreement, across geographical boundaries, without financial incentive and without a rigid hierarchy. It seemed like we weren't using this technology, or anything vaguely similar in the most powerful structures that govern our lives. I wanted to explore this."

His outside influences: "We tried to look at big films about ideas: Adam Curtis has been influential on me structurally rather than stylistically. We watched lots of films that had Philip Glass soundtracks and said important things with text on screen. Some of it rubbed off and with some of it we tried to do our own thing."

On the challenge of the idea of the film: "This was essentially a film about power structures, these are essentially invisible, so it was hard to work out how to film them in the way that wasn't really boring. We got really lucky with the football team and happened to film one of the most amazing matches I've ever seen."

What do you think SnagFilms audiences will respond to most in your movie? "Hopefully the sense of optimism. Many films are polemics or about how everything's going wrong in the world. Hopefully this is a credible argument for how we could all lead more fulfilling lives."

What's Next: "I'm making a film about the Kalash, a tribe of about 3000 who live in the mountains between Pakistan and Afghanistan. They play a game of hockey with 200 people on a team and a 5 kilometre pitch. The losers sacrifice oxen and the winners become king. It's a fascinating and beautiful place going through a lot of change. I'm excited about getting the film out there."

[Full Disclosure: SnagFilms is the parent company of Indiewire.]

Giants-Tigers tied at 3 after 6 in Game 4 of WS

Tigers starter Max Scherzer was lifted with one out in the top of the seventh. With a runner on second, rookie Drew Smyly retired Brandon Crawford on a flyball and Octavio Dotel got Angel Pagan on a grounder to second to keep the score tied.

Giants starter Matt Cain works a 1-2-3 seventh and we're headed to the eighth tied at 3.

___

FOX just showed Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford in the stands, wearing a ski cap and bundled up just like everyone else.

A few hours earlier, Stafford led the Lions to a 28-24 victory at home over the Seattle Seahawks. Play-by-play man Joe Buck points out, for the benefit of fantasy football owners, that Stafford had three touchdown passes (though he didn't to mention that Stafford also ran for a score).

Buck says one thing he knows is that broadcast partner Tim McCarver does not have a fantasy team.

"No, I do not," McCarver says proudly. "I live in real time, not fantasy, pal."

___

Delmon Young hits an opposite-field homer to right for Detroit, tying the score at 3 in the bottom of the sixth.

Giants starter Matt Cain appeared to be in great shape after striking out Miguel Cabrera and getting Prince Fielder on a popup to begin the inning. Young, however, sent a spinning slider into the strong wind and there was little doubt it would clear the fence.

Andy Dirks singled and Jhonny Peralta nearly put Detroit up by two with a long drive to left, but Gregor Blanco caught it just in front of the wall.

Fielder is 1 for 13 in the Series.

___

Buster Posey's two-run homer in the top of the sixth off Max Scherzer puts the Giants back in front, 3-2.

Marco Scutaro led off with an infield single and, one out later, Posey reached out and pulled a changeup down the left-field line for his third home run of the postseason.

Posey was actually out in front on a changeup, but he got the barrel of the bat to the ball and lofted it down the line.

___

Brandon Crawford just made another terrific play at shortstop, barehanding a grounder that deflected off Giants starter Matt Cain and making an accurate, off-balance throw to get speedy rookie Quintin Berry at first.

That prevented Miguel Cabrera from coming to the plate with two runners on in the fifth. Instead, he'll lead off the sixth.

Tigers lead 2-1. Both starting pitchers still in the game.

___

Tigers still lead 2-1 in the bottom of the fifth and Omar Infante leads off with a broken-bat single.

Very light rain falling at Comerica Park.

___

The Tigers just got some help from the elements ? perhaps their first break of the entire Series.

A strong gust of wind blowing out to right field carried Miguel Cabrera's two-out drive into the seats for a two-run homer in the third inning.

Detroit is up 2-1, its first lead in the Series and the first time the Giants have trailed in 57 innings since Game 4 of the NLCS against St. Louis.

___

Save for the back-to-back extra-base hits that gave the Giants their lead, Tigers starter Max Scherzer looks pretty sharp on nine days' rest.

He's using his changeup and he got a big out when cleanup hitter Buster Posey flied out with runners at the corners to end the top of the third inning.

There was talk that Scherzer was dealing with a sore shoulder down the stretch, but he's pitched well in the postseason. This is only his third start, and he was held to a total of 11 innings during the first two. But he racked up 18 strikeouts in those two games and compiled a 0.82 ERA.

___

Strong defense has been a huge part of the Giants' success in this Series so far. First baseman Brandon Belt made an excellent pick when third baseman Pablo Sandoval short-hopped a throw in the third.

___

Sandoval singled in the third for his 24th hit this postseason, one shy of the record for a single postseason held by Marquis Grissom (1995), Darin Erstad (2002) and David Freese (2011).

If the Giants finish off the sweep tonight, Sandoval is a sure-fire bet to win World Series MVP.

___

Detroit wastes a leadoff single in the bottom of the second by Delmon Young, one of the few Tigers hitters pulling his weight so far.

Prince Fielder is 1 for 12 in the Series.

FOX reporter Erin Andrews ? and most of the fans around her ? are bundled up in the stands.

___

San Francisco has taken the lead in the second inning for the second consecutive night.

Hunter Pence hit a ground-rule double to left-center with one out and Brandon Belt followed with a triple deep into the right-field corner.

Knowing how much trouble his team has had scoring runs, Tigers manager Jim Leyland brought the infield in and that decision saved a run when Gregor Blanco grounded out to second base. Belt held at third.

Ryan Theriot flied out to end the inning. Giants 1, Tigers 0.

Theriot is the DH for the first time in his career.

___

The temperature at first pitch was 44 degrees, with a stiff wind making it feel even colder.

Once again, runs could be hard to come by.

___

Believe it or not, the World Series could end tonight.

Seems as though it just started.

San Francisco ace Matt Cain will be on the mound at chilly Comerica Park as the Giants go for a four-game sweep of Detroit and their second championship in three years. First pitch coming up at 8:15 p.m. EDT.

Cain has already pitched a pair of clinchers in this postseason, earning the win in Game 5 of the division series against Cincinnati and Game 7 of the NLCS against St. Louis. A victory tonight would mark the perfect finish for Cain ? who pitched a perfect game in June against Houston.

Max Scherzer gets the ball for the slumping Tigers, who are hitting .165 in the Series after getting shut out in each of the past two games.

The only major league team to overcome a 3-0 deficit in the postseason was the 2004 Boston Red Sox, who rallied past the rival New York Yankees in the AL championship series.

Take nothing away from the Giants' pitchers, who have certainly been sublime. But let's be honest, unless Detroit can mount a major comeback, this Series will go down as a dud.

Iveco Presents LNG, CNG Vehicles in Brussels ... - LNG World News

Iveco Presents LNG, CNG Vehicles in Brussels, Belgium

Iveco has presented its natural gas range at the ?European Natural Gas Summit 2012?, an event focused on the natural gas vehicle market, held in Brussels the 24 and 25 October.

Iveco is European leader in the production and marketing of natural gas vehicles, that represent an important advantage both in economic and in environmental terms.

The company has a full range of CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) vehicles, from 3,5 t for the Daily Natural Power to the 12-16 t for the Eurocargo, to the 40 t for the Stralis CNG. An Iveco Stralis LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) version completes the range.

The company has long been committed to researching and developing new solutions in the sector of natural gas vehicles, with 12.000 units circulating in private company and public sector fleets, of which 5.000 Daily, 2.000 vehicles in the medium and heavy range and 5.000 buses.

?Natural gas vehicle technology is a priority for Iveco,? said Alessandro Mortali, Senior Vice President Heavy Range at Iveco. ?We have early understood the importance of methane as an alternative energy source. CNG and LNG are mature technologies, delivering low-impact transport solutions: CNG vehicles are ideal for urban missions, LNG vehicles allow the use of natural gas in regional and national distribution?.

The CNG technology guarantees considerable advantages from an environmental point of view, such as lower CO2 emissions, less particulates emissions and reduced levels of noise. In addition, the LNG system also enables a reduction in vehicle weight, allowing an increase in load-carrying capacity.

The use of natural gas-powered vehicles presents an economic advantage for vehicle operators compared to Diesel fuel. A Stralis LNG delivers a reduction in TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) of up to 12% on a regional delivery mission, over an average distance of 80.000 kilometres a year, for five years.

The Iveco Natural gas vehicles are recognized by important fleet operators. Coca-Cola Enterprises Ltd, following impressive results of a year-long trial, has taken delivery of an additional 14 gas powered Iveco Stralis 6?2 rigid trucks. Moreover, Sydeme, the public company in charge of the management of domestic waste in Moselle-Est (France), has recently renewed its fleet 34 new natural gas vehicles, among which three Daily and 25 Stralis.

A full range of Natural Gas Vehicles

Daily Natural Power

The Daily Natural Power is equipped with an FPT Industrial CNG engine of 136 HP (100 kW) with three way catalytic converter, using a stoichiometric (with chemically correct air-fuel ratio) combustion regime that brings characteristics of reliability and durability and ensures exhaust emissions well below the limits required by the European EEV legislation in force.

This system can detect the composition of the gas used and is able to adapt the actual air/fuel ratio accordingly, in order to maintain low emissions without sacrificing performance. The positive ignition results in engine noise significantly lower than that of a Diesel equivalent, so that these vehicles are particularly suitable for night-time use in urban centres, without requiring additional sound insulation measures.

Eurocargo CNG

The Eurocargo Natural Power is available in versions with gross vehicle weight from 12 to 16 t, special 6 cylinder 200 HP engine for CNG and 9-speed manual gearbox. The CNG Eurocargo has by far the lowest environmental impact among internal combustion engine: no sulphur, hydrocarbons or particulate at the exhaust; CO2 emissions lower up to 20% compared to Diesel engines of equal performance.

Stralis CNG

The Stralis CNG is equipped with the Cursor 8 CNG engine, with a 7.8 litre displacement. The Stralis CNG range covers applications from 18 to 26 t with configurations of two and three axles, 4?2 and 6x2x4, the latter having a trailing positively steered axle with pneumatic suspension.

It is ideal for urban missions and night time delivery. It is equipped with the new automatic Allison 3200 gearbox with a hydraulic torque converter and 6 speeds and includes an integrated primary auxiliary brake.

Stralis LNG

The Stralis LNG Natural Power is ideal for regional and national distribution missions, such as fuel transportation. One of the key benefits of the LNG technology is that it guarantees a much greater range for vehicles, that can reach up to 750 km. The vehicle is equipped with Cursor 8 natural gas engine with a power rating 330 HP, manual gearbox, production line Intarder and EBS. It is built for applications carrying between 18 and 40 tons.

The market opportunities for these vehicles are particularly strong in the food and beverage sectors, fuel transportation, among logistics operators and firms engaged in night-time delivery, where the reduction of noise levels is guaranteed by spark ignition engines. On average, the noise reduction for natural gas fuelled Stralis vehicles is between 3 and 6 decibels compared to a vehicle with the same power rating running on Diesel.

Sandy: East Coast braces for epic hurricane, ?life-threatening? storm surge

Waves crash into a pier in Nags Head, N.C., Oct. 27, 2012. (Gerry Broome/AP)

"Superstorm." "The Perfect Storm." "Frankenstorm."

Whatever you want to call it, the East Coast is bracing for Hurricane Sandy, an epic, "rare hybrid storm" that is expected to bring a life-threatening storm surge to the mid-Atlantic coast, Long Island Sound and New York harbor, forecasters say, with winds expected to be at or near hurricane force when it makes landfall sometime on Monday.

According to the National Hurricane Center, the Category 1 storm was centered about 260 miles southeast of Cape Hatteras, N.C., and 395 miles south of New York City early Sunday, carrying maximum sustained winds of 75 mph and moving northeast at 10 mph.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg ordered the mandatory evacuation for low-lying coastal areas, including Coney Island, the Rockaways, Brighton Beach, Red Hook and some parts of lower Manhattan.

"If you don't evacuate, you're not just putting your own life at risk," Mayor Bloomberg said. "You're endangering first responders who may have to rescue you."

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced the suspension of all MTA service, including Long Island Railroad and Metro North, beginning at 7 p.m. Sunday. New York City Public Schools will be closed on Monday, the mayor said.

[Related: Superstorm could impact 60 million]

Sandy is expected to continue on a parallel path along the mid-Atlantic coast later Sunday before making a sharp turn toward the northwest on Monday--with coastal New Jersey and New York City in its projected path.

But the path is not necessarily the problem.

"Don't get fixated on a particular track," the Associated Press said. "Wherever it hits, the rare behemoth storm inexorably gathering in the eastern U.S. will afflict a third of the country with sheets of rain, high winds and heavy snow."

(Weather.com)

A tropical storm warning has been issued between Cape Fear to Duck, N.C., while hurricane watches and high-wind warnings are in effect from the Carolinas through New England. The hurricane-force winds extend 175 miles from the epicenter of the storm, while tropical storm-force winds extend 520 miles--making Sandy one of the biggest storms to ever hit the East Coast.

"We're looking at impact of greater than 50 to 60 million people," Louis Uccellini, head of environmental prediction for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, told the Associated Press.

"The size of this alone, affecting a heavily populated area, is going to be history making," Jeff Masters wrote on Weather Underground blog.

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie ordered a shutdown of the state's casinos.

"I can be as cynical as anyone," Christie said on Saturday. "But when the storm comes, if it's as bad as they're predicting, you're going to wish you weren't as cynical as you otherwise might have been."

Similar emergency evacuations were being mulled by state officials in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire and even Maine.

"This is not a coastal threat alone," said Craig Fugate, director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, said during a media briefing early Sunday. "This is a very large area."

Forecasters also fear the combination of storm surge, high tide and heavy rain--between 3 and 12 inches in some area--could be life-threatening for coastal residents.

According to the National Hurricane Center summary, coastal water levels could rise anywhere between 1 and 12 feet from North Carolina to Cape Cod, depending on the timing of the "peak surge." A surge of 6 to 11 feet is forecast for Long Island Sound and Raritan Bay, including New York Harbor.

The storm surge in New York Harbor during Hurricane Irene, forecasters noted, was four feet.

October 24, 2012 ? Times are tight here in 2012, and the upcoming elections have a lot of people worried that things could get worse before they get better, regardless of which candidate is elected. However, investing is still done and a lot of people are looking to find the right choice to invest in so that their money can work harder for them. Precious metals have such a strong history of preserving and improving their value that they are often a first choice, and gold tends to be the metal that draws the most spotlight. However, one of the problems with investing in gold is the high level of expense per ounce. Many are choosing to Buy Silver Assets instead because they provide an option that also holds value well yet the price per ounce is currently riding around $35 an ounce versus the close to $1,800 per ounce for gold. Simple math tells investors they could there for have around 50 ounces of silver or a single ounce of gold. This means silver offers greater flexibility and since it is still in heavy demand by a range of industries, choosing it also offers a solid future that investors like to see when deciding where they want to put their money.

BuySilverAssets is a blog focused on helping investors decide whether or not silver is the right choice for their investing needs. The site was built to provide quality information on all the different aspects involved in choosing to invest in silver and it has a great deal of free content available that covers silver coins, choosing where to buy silver, deciding whether or not silver bullion is a smart choice and much more. A resource like this is one that many experienced investors which they would have had available to them when they were first getting started with precious metals. It clarifies the key decisions a beginning investor needs to make and ensures that they will be making those decisions based on sound information. Sites like this one are the future of the web, many say, because they provide free information that can help avoid costly errors in investing.

Who Shouldn't Smoke E Cigs

As of the 1950?s, the cigarette tobacco industry is still under massive critique mainly because of the elevated education of wellness issues involved with tobacco smoking. At the beginning, cigarette suppliers were originally nervous in trusting the majority of the investigation that claimed smoking would raise particular medical hazards, particularly heart related illnesses.

The good news is, over six decades subsequent, it's everyday knowledge that traditional cigs are terribly dangerous for one's well being. During the past three decades, there had been a large number of initiatives to find less dangerous alternatives for those that smoke. Nicotine Gums and the patch are merely a few forms of fashionable possibilities. The hottest product to come to the market stands out as the smokeless cigarette. E cigs, or electric cigarettes, have only been used for around 6 years, even so they maintain to give the exact same nicotine amounts devoid of all of the different pollutants.

Despite the fact that first tests have shown that nicotine would be the only chemical substance within an electric cigarette, the general public should really nonetheless contemplate if it's definitely, a less hazardous different. In time, a large number of providers, mainly the ones along the brink of the latest modern technology, have found their merchandising plans move somewhat faster than their analysis.

That claimed, it's incontrovertible fact that both carbon monoxide and tar residue will never be included in e cigarettes. These kinds of contents are a few of the extra undesirable of the tons of toxins present in conventional tobacco cigarettes.

While the facts aren't all one hundred percent verified at the minute, there may be little doubt that this e cigarette is known as a step on the appropriate course. When it boils down to it, even nicotine is a medicine that should be sidestepped, even so I anticipate when you still really need your nicotine dose, it is healthier to do it though bypassing the remaining 4 hundred toxic agents.

Even so, the majority of e cigarette firms and governments round the globe are in agreement that there are specific persons that must not use e-cigarettes. The reason being that in spite of them being greatly much healthier than basic smokes, they can be still unhealthy due to their nicotine content and vaporization systems. Even while the electronic cigarette is ordinarily harmless, and comparatively speaking, significantly less risky compared with cigs, all of the following individuals should not use smokeless cigarettes:

- ? Those below the age of 18

- ? Those with cardiovascular diseases

- ? Individuals with hypertension

- ? Individuals that suffer from an impaired immune system

- ? Those with an allergy or intolerance to nicotine

While for many, this notification isn't a shock, for others this might potentially be the difference between unfavorable medical issues and bypassing nicotine all in all.

The big question mark over gasoline from air

In a shipping container on a British industrial park, not far from where George Stephenson launched the world's first steam railway in 1825, another transport revolution might be beginning. Every day the machinery inside produces half a litre of purified gasoline. It sounds humdrum until you realise one thing: the only raw material used is air.

Last week, Air Fuel Synthesis (AFS), a company in Stockton, UK, revealed the first successful demonstration of an idea that dates back to the oil crisis of the 1970s: that carbon, hydrogen and oxygen can be plucked from carbon dioxide and water in air to be converted into methanol and then morphed into gasoline.

However, amidst the headlines, some media coverage overlooked the key point: the energy efficiency of the process has yet to be demonstrated. This matters because the technique uses electricity for key stages. It should not require more energy input than is gleaned from burning the fuel it produces.

The big idea is to capture atmospheric CO2 and turn it into fuel so there's no net increase in CO2 from cars and trucks fuelled by such gasoline. As long as the process is powered by renewable electricity sources such as solar, wind or tidal, using the gasoline is carbon neutral.

Snagging carbon dioxide

The AFS plant comprises a CO2 capture unit in one shipping container, with a methanol reactor and miniature gasoline refining system in another. Air is blown into a sodium hydroxide mist, snagging CO2 as sodium carbonate. A condenser collects water from the same air. To make methanol ? formula CH3OH ? hydrogen is generated by electrolysing the water while the carbon and oxygen come from electrolysing the sodium carbonate. The methanol is then converted to gasoline.

Following tests over the last three months, AFS chief executive Peter Harrison says the demonstrator reliably produces half-a-litre of gasoline a day. Peter Edwards ,an inorganic chemist at the University of Oxford whose team is working with a Saudi firm on similar ideas, is impressed: "I take my hat off to Air Fuel Synthesis. They have taken a concept that has been around for 35 years and gotten the process going."

But he points out the demonstrator, funded with a ?1.2 million, two-year investment from private backers, was built to make gasoline, "not to prove its net efficiency or energy balances".

Douglas Stephan, a chemist at the University of Toronto, Canada, also researching fuel production from CO2, describes AFS's demonstrator as "an engineering tour-de-force". But he too warns efficiency is the key. "Until a detailed assessment of the energy efficiency is enunciated, I would remain sceptical about this technology," he says.

Andrew Bocarsly, chief science advisor at Liquid Light Inc, a company in Monmouth Junction, New Jersey, aiming to synthesise chemicals like methanol from CO2, points out that many researchers worldwide have so far failed to find cost-effective and efficient ways to split hydrogen from water.

Going to need a bigger plant

"I do wonder about the cost efficiency of their chemical conversion processes," he says, noting energy is required to back convert carbonate to gaseous CO2, to liberate hydrogen from water, to convert the hydrogen and CO2 to methanol and to transform methanol to gasoline.

AFS says demonstrating efficiency will have to wait for a bigger plant, which will fit into three shipping containers that can be dropped anywhere fuel is needed and produce 1200 litres of gasoline a day. Harrison says motorsport venues, keen to reduce their fossil fuel dependence, and some remote islands have expressed an interest in these ?5 million units. "The demonstrator has given us the confidence that this next level of gasoline plant will be efficient enough," says AFS marketing manager Graham Truscott.

Harrison says the ultimate goal is to build refinery-sized plants that could compete with oil ? but he says they could cost ?10 billion and need serious government aid. That in turn would need serious proof of energy efficiency. Bocarsly adds: "This issue will be the test for commercialisation."

There's one more factor to consider, says Edwards: "The efficiency of this process would also have to be balanced against the cost of alternative measures like burying or dumping CO2 underground."

Patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) experienced more major and non-major clinically relevant GI bleeding when taking rivaroxaban than patients taking warfarin. As part of the ROCKET AF trial, researchers from multiple institutions, including Harvard Medical School; Mount Sinai Medical Center; Janssen Research & Development; and Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals, randomized 14,264 patients with nonvalvular AF to receive either rivaroxaban or dose-adjusted warfarin. Post-hoc analysis was performed on all patients while receiving study medication until 2 days after the last dose. Results showed that GI bleeding events (upper, lower, rectal) occurred more frequently in patients receiving rivaroxaban (n=394) than warfarin (n=290). In addition, major and nonmajor, clinically relevant bleeding occurred more frequently with rivaroxaban use than warfarin use. However, there were fewer fatal GI bleeds with rivaroxaban and the absolute fatality rate was very low. This study was presented during CHEST 2012, the annual meeting of the American College of Chest Physicians, held October 20 25, in Atlanta, Georgia.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) ? Tamika Catchings finally has the only title that was missing from her incredible basketball resume ? a WNBA championship.

She scored 25 points to help the Indiana Fever win their first WNBA title with an 87-78 victory over the Minnesota Lynx on Sunday night.

Catchings, who was the MVP of the Finals, averaged 22.3 points in the series, which the Fever won 3-1 over the defending WNBA champions.

"When you come into this league, your goal and dream is to win a WNBA championship," Catchings said. "Twelve years later ... it's so sweet right now."

Catchings had won three Olympic gold medals and an NCAA championship at Tennessee in 1998, but never a WNBA one. She had been in a position to clinch at home before. The Fever led Phoenix 2-1 in the best-of-five WNBA Finals in 2009, but the Mercury beat the Fever 90-77, took the series back to Phoenix and won the title at home in Game 5.

This time, Catchings took it home with college coach Pat Summitt looking on in the crowd.

The Fever won even though No. 2 scorer Katie Douglas missed most of the series with a severely sprained left ankle. Douglas checked in with 3.2 seconds left to a loud ovation.

Erin Phillips added 18 points and eight rebounds while Shavonte Zellous and Briann January each had 15 points for the Fever.

Minnesota was trying to become the first team to repeat since Los Angeles in 2001 and 2002.

"It was hard being the hunted, as we all know," Minnesota coach Cheryl Reeve said. "There's a reason this hasn't been done in over 10 years. I really felt like if there was a team that could do it, it was our team."

Indiana held Minnesota below 40 percent shooting in all three wins.

"They played good defense," Minnesota guard Lindsay Whalen said. "They contested shots and they made it tough for us to get in the lane a little bit. I think that was the theme of the whole series. They were just tough, and give them credit for the way they played."

Indiana led 63-58 at the end of the third quarter of Game 4. Minnesota cut Indiana's lead to 70-67 on a jumper by Maya Moore, but Phillips scored on a drive past Moore, got a defensive rebound, then found Shavonte Zellous for a 3-pointer from the left corner to give the Fever a 75-67 lead with 4:58 remaining.

Indiana led by at least five points the rest of the way. A 3-pointer by January gave Indiana an 80-72 lead with 1:18 to play. Reeve was called for a technical with 57.6 seconds remaining, Catchings made the free throw and the Fever took an 81-74 lead. Zellous made two more free throws with 27.2 seconds to play, and Fever fans began celebrating.

Seimone Augustus, Minnesota's leading scorer in the playoffs, was held to eight points on 3-for-21 shooting on Sunday. She shot 6-for-30 in the final two games of the series after the Fever switched January over to guard her.

Catchings said January, who was on the WNBA first-team all-defense squad, did her job.

"I think she set the tone," Catchings said. "All her (Augustus') baskets were hard. She used up all her energy in the first quarter."

Whalen scored 22 points and Moore added 16 points for the Lynx, who were vying to become the first team to win consecutive titles since Los Angeles in 2001 and 2002.

Moore picked up her third foul with 6:13 left in the second quarter. Reeve, who was fined for her jacket-tossing tantrum in Game 2, became animated again while disagreeing with the call. As the crowd erupted, Reeve waved hello and made the motion for a technical foul.

This time, Reeve's antics didn't help much as in Game 2, when her team pulled away from a tight contest after her technical foul for a convincing win. Minnesota tied the game three times in the second quarter, but the Fever closed with a 7-2 run, including a 3-pointer by Phillips, to take a 47-42 lead at halftime. Whalen scored 14 points in the first half to keep the Lynx in the game, often scoring on uncontested drives. Minnesota hung tough, despite Augustus shooting 2-for-13 in the first half.

It was right there for the Fever.

"Coming into halftime, we said we have 20 minutes and we're not trying to go back to to Minnesota to close this thing out," Zellous said.

Indiana started the second half on a 9-4 run, including two buckets by Catchings, to take a 56-46 lead.

Minnesota came right back. A driving layup by Moore cut Indiana's lead to 56-54 and forced the Fever to call timeout.

Minnesota tied the game on another drive by Moore, but the Fever responded with a 3-pointer by Catchings and a basket by Jessica Davenport to push the lead back to five by the end of the quarter.

Indiana then closed the deal at home in front of a sellout crowd.

"They made some huge runs at us and gave it everything at us, and I'm just relieved more than anything because we deserve this," Phillips said. "We've been through so much as a team, we've lost in crucial times and we've stuck together. I'm just so proud right now."
