NEWBURYPORT ? The city has released the schedule of events for Health and Wellness Week, which begins today:
Monday
Introduction to Boating Safety: 6 to 9 p.m., City Hall Auditorium, Pleasant Street. Participants will learn the basics of safe boating at a special introductory course. Those who are interested in pursuing their state boater?s certification should speak with the instructor about using the class as a prerequisite for the boating accreditation course.
Wellness Week Senior Event: 1 to 3 p.m. Newburyport Public Library, 94 State St. Speakers will address pain management as well as resources available to seniors. Dr. Adam Palombo will discuss strategies for less aches and pains and provide a learning opportunity for the self-management of joint and muscle pain in the active senior citizen. Michael McDermott of Elder Services of the Merrimack Valley will discuss the many resources available to seniors in the region, including nutrition, education on Medicare, issues of isolation and transportation.
Children?s Nutrition & Fitness: Dr M?ch? Seibel will be performing at the Brown School for the afternoon session. He?ll be talking and singing about the importance of nutrition and exercise for kids. Seibel is a professor at UMass and founder of HealthRock, an award-winning approach to health education. For more information, visit www.healthrock.com.
Tuesday
Jeanne Geiger Crisis Center: 7 to 8 p.m. Newburyport Public Library. Learn about the services provided by this nationally recognized leader in the effort to end domestic violence. The staff and volunteers help victims of family violence regain safety, well-being and self-sufficiency. Last year, the center aided more than 1,400 people in the region.
Immunizations: the good, the bad, the controversial: 10 to 11 a.m. Newburyport Public Library. Dr. Tammy Bottner will discuss how immunizations work, what diseases they prevent, controversies in immunizations and new immunizations, with time for questions and answers at the end. Bottner has been in practice in Newburyport for more than 15 years and is co-owner of Riverside Pediatrics.
Wednesday
Stress and Depression in Newburyport Youth: 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Newburyport High School, High Street. The Beacon Coalition, in conjunction with University of Lowell nursing students, will host an in-school presentation to help high school students learn how to deal with stress and depression.
Tobacco Control, Massachusetts Healthy Communities: 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., Newburyport City Hall. Ron Beauregard, director of Massachusetts Healthy Communities, will give an overview of the Healthy Communities Educational and Enforcement Program. The presentation geared at prents will highlight state laws, how compliance checks are conducted, new strategies tobacco companies are using to target youth and how Healthy Communities is working with youth groups, schools and the Board of Health to implement new regulations.
Thursday
Fitness Night: Local recreation and fitness establishments throughout the city will highlight the fun and fitness opportunities available in Newburyport
Free Running Clinic: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Greater Boston Running, 27 Water St. In conjunction with New Balance, Greater Boston Running will offer a running clinic. Participants will receive personalized recommendations based on an evaluation of their form and stride while running and/or walking.
Free Basic Rock Climbing Safety Course: 6 p.m., Metro Rock, 40 Parker St. Class participants will qualify for a free raffle for a day pass for climbing and gear. After the course, participants may choose to stay and climb for only $10.
Guiding Our Children?s Choices: 6 to 7:30 p.m., Kelley School Youth Center, High Street. Beacon Coalition will host speaker Marilyn Belmonte for a program designed to empower parents of elementary school students to prevent teen substance abuse.
Saturday
Mayor?s Health and Wellness Fair and Influenza Clinic: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., City Hall. The clinic will conclude the week?s citywide events promoting healthy lifestyles for Newburyport residents. The fair offers residents an opportunity to gather information from a variety of health, wellness and recreational organizations that can have a positive impact on their lifestyle and well-being.
This free event features a flu clinic and health screenings such as blood pressure, hearing and body mass index; discounts and coupons for local health and fitness establishments, nutritional information and plenty of free food samples. Residents can even get their annual dog license at the fair and learn about animal wellness from the city?s animal control officer.
In addition, residents are encouraged to promote a healthy planet by bringing their textiles (old, torn and tattered cloth and clothes) to the fair and depositing them in the textile recycling truck that will be located in front of City Hall.
