Lost in shuffle: 400-year-old playing cards

Call it a card player's dream. A complete set of 52 silver playing cards gilded in gold and dating back 400 years has been discovered.

Created in Germany around 1616, the cards were engraved by a man named Michael Fr?mmer, who created at least one other set of silver cards.

According to a story, backed up by a 19th-century brass plate, the cards were at one point owned by a Portuguese princess who fled the country, cards in hand, after Napoleon's armies invaded in 1807.

At the time they were created in 1616 no standardized cards existed; different parts of Europe had their own card styles. This particular set uses a suit seen in Italy, with swords, coins, batons and cups in values from ace to 10. Each of these suits has three face cards ? king, knight (also known as cavalier) and knave. There are no jokers. [ See Photos of the Silver Playing Cards ]

In 2010, the playing cards were first put on auction by an anonymous family at Christie's auction house in New York. Purchased by entrepreneur Selim Zilkha, the cards were recently described by Timothy Schroder, a historian with expertise in gold and silver decorative arts, in his book "Renaissance and Baroque Silver, Mounted Porcelain and Ruby Glass from the Zilkha Collection"(Paul Holberton Publishing, 2012).

"Silver cards were exceptional," Schroder writes. "They were not made for playing with but as works of art for the collector's cabinet, or Kunstkammer." Today, few survive. "(O)nly five sets of silver cards are known today and of these only one ? the Zilkha set ? is complete."?

On the cards, two of the kings are depicted wearing ancient Roman clothing while one is depicted as a Holy Roman emperor and another is dressed up as a sultan, with clothing seen in the Middle East. . The knights and knaves are depicted in different poses wearing (then-contemporary) Renaissance military or courtly costumes. Each card is about 3.4 inches by 2 inches (8.6 centimeters by 5 centimeters) in size and blank on the back.

Gilding with mercury
Creating the card set would have been a hazardous job. For the gilding, its designers used mercury, a poisonous substance that can potentially kill.

"You ground up gold into kind of a dust, and you mix it with mercury, and you painted that onto the surface where you wished the gilding to appear," Schroder told LiveScience in an interview. The mercury gets burned off in a kiln, a process "that would leave the gold chemically bonded to the silver."

The process is illegal today, he noted, and even in Renaissance times, it was known to be hazardous. "I don't think they quite understood why it was dangerous, but they did appreciate the dangers of it," Schroder said.

A gift from a princess?
The owner of the 17th-century card set is not known. However, according to a tradition detailed by the anonymous family who sold it, in the early 19th century, the cards were in the possession of Infanta Carlota Joaquina, a daughter of a Spanish king, who was married to a prince in Portugal. She fled to Brazil when Napoleon's armies marched into Iberia in 1807, apparently taking the silver cards with her.

After Napoleon forced her brother, Ferdinand VII, to abdicate the throne of Spain, she made several attempts to take over the Spanish crown and control the country's holdings in the New World. According to the family tradition, she gave the card set to the wife of Felipe Contucci, a man who helped in her efforts.?

While this story cannot be proven, Schroder said he has "very little reason to doubt it." He added that "when the cards were acquired by Mr. Zilkha, they came in an early 19th-century leather box which had a brass plate in them, which also appeared to date from the early or middle of the 19th century, with this provenance engraved on it."

Contucci's plot
Spain still controlled a vast empire in the New World at the time of Napoleon's invasion. Among its territories was the vice royalty of the Rio de la Plata, a large swath of land centered in Buenos Aires (in modern-day Argentina).

In November 1808, Contucci was in contact with leaders in Buenos Aires, according to a conference paper presented last February by Anthony McFarlane, a professor at the University of Warwick. Contucci told the princess they had made her an offer that would see her gain control of a new kingdom in South America. [ Top 12 Warrior Moms in History ]

McFarlane writes that "Contucci raised her hopes by informing in mid-November 1808 that 124 leading men were ready to support a military intervention by a military force led by the Infante Pedro Carlos (a relative of the princess) and supported by Admiral Smith (of Britain), to install her (as) the constitutional monarch of an independent kingdom."

However, this plan was foiled when government officials from Portugal, Spain and Britain all objected to it.

Then, in August 1809, the Spanish ambassador arrived in Rio with instructions from the Junta Central (the Spanish government not controlled by Napoleon), "to prevent Carlota from entering Spanish territory and to deflect her ambitions to become regent," writes McFarlane.

Carlota's dream of becoming a ruling queen was simply not in the cards.

Mitel UC360 | Armstrong Communications PLC

We have heard from so many customers about the troubles they have managing a remote workforce; setting up training sessions for people who work from home, out on the road, or in disparate branches; and helping teams collaborate when they are not based in the same location.

It?s a problem that is becoming widespread, largely due to the relatively recent modernisation of the workforce, which often means contacting employees on the go and bringing together the best talent from separate branches ? some of whom may never meet each other in person.

The internet and unified communications technology has made all of this possible and businesses are really seeing the cost and productivity benefits of working in a geographically-disparate way. But as with any major change in operations, remote working has led to problems with communication, close collaboration and even practical concerns like waiting for meeting rooms to become available.

Communications technology providers have been working hard to overcome these difficulties and we are particularly impressed with the Mitel UC360 model. This easy-to-use and low-cost solution is replacing old-fashioned conference hub systems in businesses across the country and when you list its capabilities, it?s easy to see why.

Benefit #1: No need for meeting rooms

Most companies have a selection of meeting rooms they use for conference calls, but with floor space both expensive and in short supply, this can mean waiting your turn to collaborate with remote workers and allowing work to fall behind schedule in the meantime. However, with the Mitel UC360, this problem disappears entirely. The small and transportable hub can be used in the workspace, with no need for the extra connections a meeting room traditionally has on offer.

Benefit #2: High quality sound and visuals

Another problem businesses combat every day is ensuring good communication continues despite quiet or low-quality audio on a conference call, or grainy footage on a video call. But as the Mitel UC360 uses high-definition technology, this difficulty is completely erased from the process and you can enjoy a meeting or training session that truly feels in-room.

Benefit #3: Escalate a phone call to a multimedia experience

Perhaps the limitation that holds businesses back the most when they decide to collaborate over wide distances is the difficulty in sharing documentation. Currently, many meetings take place over a conference call, with necessary documents shared via email before or during the event. However, with the Mitel UC360, the process of sharing documents has become much easier. It is possible to use Cloud solutions like Google Doc or Dropbox, USB devices and Micro SD cards can be plugged straight into the communications hub, and you can even tap into remote desktops.

Benefit #4: Little training needed

New technology normally benefits productivity, but not until it can be used at its full capacity ? that is, once staff are trained and accustomed to operating the technology they have been provided with. Mitel seem to have kept this limitation firmly in mind when designing their UC360 collaboration hub, installing an intuitive touchscreen that is so simple to use, a novice could pick it up with no difficulty. This cuts down on the need for training and the downtime that can occur due to confusion around new devices.

Benefit #5: So cost effective, even small businesses can use it

For years, remote collaboration and conferences have been the domain of larger businesses which can afford the technology and the meeting room space to bring remote workers together. But the Mitel UC360 finally gives small businesses the chance to take advantage of a modernised workforce. Cut spending on travel and on office space by allowing employees to conduct their duties from wherever they find it easiest and inexpensive to do so, while you patch the team together using the Mitel UC360 anywhere, anytime.

As our customers know, Armstrong Communications always tries to look to the future and provide the most forward-thinking, cost-effective and cutting edge solutions and support available. Stocks trim losses after Boehner upbeat on 'cliff'

4 hrs.

Stocks sharply pared losses on Wednesday after U.S. House Speaker John Boehner said he was optimistic that a deal on the "fiscal cliff" to avert large tax hikes and spending cuts could be reached.

After falling nearly 1 percent, the S&P 500 pared losses to trade near flat after Boehner said that Republicans were willing to put revenues on the table if Democrats agreed to spending cuts.

For weeks now, the market has been swinging back and forth on headlines out of Washington regarding the ongoing U.S. budget talks.

Later in the day, President Barack Obama will meet at the White House with chief executives from top corporations including Goldman Sachs , Deloitte LLP, and Caterpillar Inc , to discuss U.S. fiscal problems.

"While there's little that the president and vice president could do at today's meeting to improve moods in America's corner office, we still believe a legislative compromise will be reached before 'fiscal cliff' detonates," said Jack Ablin, chief investment officer at BMO Private Bank.

"In the meantime, we expect daunting headlines and emotional market volatility."

First Thoughts: Both parties manage expectations on 'fiscal cliff'

One possible result of the deficit reduction talks is a rise in the tax rate on dividends, prompting some firms to issue special dividends or move up plans for dividends.

The latest example is retailer Costco Wholesale Corp , which said it will pay a special $3 billion dividend to investors. The company posted monthly same-store sales that beat forecasts. The stock rose 4.7 percent to $101.07.

The Dow Jones industrial average was up 3.38 points, or 0.03 percent, at 12,881.51. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was down 1.73 points, or 0.12 percent, at 1,397.21. The Nasdaq Composite Index was down 5.10 points, or 0.17 percent, at 2,962.69.

Earlier, the S&P 500 fell nearly 1 percent on data that showed U.S. single-family home sales fell in October, casting a shadow over what has been one of the brighter spots in the U.S. economy.

Knight Capital Group Inc shares jumped 10 percent to $3.27 on news that Getco LLC has sent a proposal for a merger between Getco and Knight Capital at a price of $3.50 per share, according to a regulatory filing.

On the downside, Apple Inc shares fell 1.3 percent to $576.80, weighing heavily on the overall market.?

Damascus fighting cuts off Internet, airport

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Syrian rebels battled forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad just outside Damascus on Thursday, forcing the closure of the main airport road, and the Dubai-based Emirates airline suspended flights to the Syrian capital.

Residents also reported Internet connections in the capital were down and mobile and land telephone lines working only sporadically in what appeared to be the worst disruption to communications in Syria since an uprising began 20 months ago.

The past two weeks have seen rebels overrunning army bases across Syria, exposing Assad's loss of control in northern and eastern regions despite the devastating air power that he has used to bombard opposition strongholds.

Rebels and activists said the fighting along the road to Damascus airport, southeast of the capital, was heavier in that area than at any other time in the conflict.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a opposition monitoring group, said clashes were particularly intense in Babbila, a suburb bordering the insurgent stronghold of Tadamon.

Nabeel al-Ameer, a spokesman for the rebel Military Council in Damascus, said that a large number of army reinforcements had arrived along the road after three days of scattered clashes ending with rebels seizing side streets to the north of it.

"There are no clashes directly around the airport; the fighting is about 3 or 4 kilometers away," he said via Skype, adding that rebels had taken control of many secondary roads and were expected to advance towards the airport.

He said that he hoped the proximity of the rebels to the airport would dissuade authorities from using it to import military equipment, but the priority now was to block the road.

A Syrian security source told Reuters on condition of anonymity that the army had started a "cleansing operation" in the capital to confront rebel advances.

Residents said the Internet in Damascus crashed in the early afternoon and mobile and land telephone lines were functioning only intermittently.

A blog post on Renesys, a U.S. company which tracks Internet traffic worldwide, said that at 12:26 p.m. in Damascus, Syria's international Internet connectivity shut down completely.

Emirates said it was suspending daily flights to Damascus "until further notice", but other airlines continued operations.

Airport sources in Cairo said an Egypt Air flight that left at 1:30 p.m. (1130 GMT) had landed in Damascus as scheduled.

"The Egypt Air plane has arrived ... and passengers are all safe but the pilot was instructed to take off back to Cairo without passengers if he felt that the situation there is not good to stay for longer," an official at Cairo airport said.

Elsewhere in Damascus, warplanes bombed Kafr Souseh and Daraya, two neighborhoods that fringe the center of the city where rebels have managed to hide out and ambush army units, according to opposition activists.

"NOT LAST DAYS YET"

A senior European Union official said that Assad appeared to be preparing for a military showdown around Damascus, possibly by isolating the city with a network of checkpoints.

"The rebels are gaining ground but it is still rather slow. We are not witnessing the last days yet," the official said on condition of anonymity.

"On the outskirts of Damascus, there are mortars and more attacks. The regime is thinking of protecting itself ... with checkpoints in the next few days ... (It) seems the regime is preparing for major battle on Damascus."

In the north of the country, rebel units launched an offensive to seize an army base close to the main north-south highway that would allow them to block troop movements and cut Assad's main supply route to Aleppo, Syria's biggest city.

The Observatory said that rebel units from around Idlib province massed early on Thursday morning to attack Wadi al-Deif, a base east of the rebel-held town of Maarat al-Numan.

Wadi al-Deif has been a thorn in the side of rebel units who first besieged the station in October but met fierce resistance from government forces, backed up by air strikes.

Assad is fighting an insurgency that grew out of peaceful demonstrations for democratic reform but escalated, after a military crackdown on protesters, into a civil war in which 40,000 people have been killed.

Most foreign powers have condemned Assad but stopped short of arming rebel fighters as they fear heavy weapons could make their way into the hands of radical Islamist units, who have grown increasingly prominent in the insurgency.

Rebels decry their supporters for not providing them with surface-to-air missiles that they say they need to counter the air force. But recent looting of anti-aircraft missiles from army bases has allowed them to shoot down helicopters and jets.

"So far, there is no evidence that any of the surface-to-air missiles used to date have come from outside Syria," said Peter Bouckaert, emergencies director at Human Rights Watch.

"The limited number of surface-to-air missiles that have shown up all appear to have come from Syrian military stock captured by the armed opposition."

He said the number of these missiles in rebel hands was probably over 20 but that will rise significantly as rebels are capturing military bases on an almost-daily basis.

The relatively small number of anti-aircraft missiles looted so far means that many rebel-controlled areas of the country remain vulnerable to air strikes. The Observatory said 15 citizens, including children and women, were killed during a bombing in Aleppo's Ansari district on Thursday.

Activist video footage showed the bodies of at least four children, wrapped in red blankets and apparently wearing pyjamas. Another video showed the immediate aftermath of the attack, with the bodies of children in the street and covered in cement dust. Half of one young boy's head was missing.

Western lawmakers seek probe of refineries

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Six Democratic senators representing states along the Pacific Coast asked the Justice Department on Tuesday to investigate the role of oil refineries in gas spikes that occurred in May and October even as crude oil prices were declining.

Gas prices jumped last month in California to more than $5 a gallon. Analysts said a web of refinery problems were to blame.

But the senators say a review of California refinery emissions data revealed inconsistencies between the time refineries were actually producing petroleum products and when maintenance shutdowns were publicly reported. They said misleading reports of shutdowns could create a perceived shortage of gasoline.

"It is important to note that because the West Coast refinery market is highly concentrated and isolated, inaccurate information about just one refinery being down can impact gasoline prices for tens of millions of consumers," the senators said in a letter to Attorney General Eric Holder.

They said an analysis by McCullough Research indicates that gasoline inventories were either increasing or remaining at historic five-year averages during the highest price spikes. They said records that only can be gained through subpoena can determine whether various refinery companies violated a Federal Trade Commission rule against "false or misleading public announcements of planned pricing or output decisions." Violations of the rule subject companies to fines of up to $1 million a day per violation.

A trade group representing some refinery companies along the coast, Western States Petroleum Association, did not immediately return calls seeking comment on the senators' request.

The letter seeking the investigation was sent by Sens. Maria Cantwell and Patty Murray of Washington, Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley of Oregon, and Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer of California, all Democrats.

Once-Powerful Grover Norquist Losing Clout Among Republican Leaders

Congress is working to avoid the so-called "fiscal cliff," a combination of tax increases and budget cuts that happen Jan. 1 if the federal government doesn't change laws passed in 2010. Republicans have been leery of raising taxes, but now they seem to be on board for some proposals after interviews on Sunday talk shows. Some leading GOP figures denounced Grover Norquist from Americans for Tax Reform and his "Taxpayer Protection Pledge" signed by more than 275 incumbents during the 2012 election cycle.

* AFP reports GOP strategist Matthew Dowd told ABC News that Norquist "is an impediment to good governing. The only thing good about [him] is he's named after a character from 'Sesame Street.'"

* Some prominent Republican legislators to Congress have bucked the Taxpayer Protection Pledge. Sen. Saxby Chambliss of Georgia, Rep. Peter King of New York and Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina all refuted the pledge, according to ABC News.

* Graham told ABC, "The only pledge we should be making ... is to avoid becoming Greece. Republicans should put revenue on the table."

* Chambliss said, "I care more about my country than I do a 20-year-old pledge," also according to ABC News. King wholeheartedly agreed with the Georgian.

* Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., also broke with Norquist. According to the Washington Post, Corker said, "The only thing I'm honoring is the oath I take ... when I'm sworn in this January."

* Despite the perceived defections, Norquist isn't worried about his "no tax increase" pledge. He told the Washington Post that neither Chambliss nor Graham would vote for a tax increase "between now and 2014."

* Norquist further asserted that Chambliss made his pledge to the "people of Georgia" and not to the founder of Americans for Tax Reform. The tax policy guru felt it was "odd" that the senator attacked him after a stance in early 2011 eschewing tax increases, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

* The Wall Street Journal notes in an exclusive interview that the Washington insider claims Democrats have tried to "trick Republicans into breaking the pledge... this isn't my first rodeo."

* The Journal article also reveals President Barack Obama agreed to keep Bush-era tax cuts on the books for two years.

* Norquist founded Americans for Tax Reform in 1985 at the request of President Ronald Reagan. The no-tax pledge was signed by 238 House members in the 112th Congress and 41 senators. Additionally, 13 governors and 1,244 state legislators have also signed on.

* The pledge encourages elected officials to "oppose any and all efforts to increase" marginal income tax rates on individuals and businesses. The verbiage of the pledge also rejects notions of limiting deductions that taxpayers can take to reduce income tax liabilities to the federal government.

A favorite junk store and a favorite day | Sierra Foothill Garden

My Favorite Junk Store and Why I Like It

I?m itchin? to go to the junk stores again. Boy do I miss the ?ARC Store? (Assoc of Retarded Citizens) in Fullerton, CA, near where I used to live. They?d bring new things in by the box-full EVERY DAY from the greater Los Angeles area and it was right around the corner from me. PLUS, they had colored price tags and each day two colors would be half price! I?d go every week, browse and cherry-pick.

***

Two styles
When we bought property here in the Central California mountains in 2000, I stopped collecting tropical fish. I lost interest in buying anything at all in the way of decoration for my beach-y themed small city house 20 miles from the ocean. I now desired a mountainy, ranch-y style house in the woods.

Our Fullerton home

Our mountain home

Our mountain home, same couch and coffee table,?casual camp style

In 2005, my husband and I finally moved to the seven acres of land in the Sierra Foothills of California we had found, located just below Yosemite National Park. This began a new adventure for us and as a couple of city kids, we sure got an education about country life.

House Framing

House Framing

We never dreamed we?d be building our own house,?or at least designing it, tiling floors for it and painting it. As a lifelong gardener, I was excited about gardening in this new location. The surroundings are wild and scenic, with a tall massive mountain rising high above the sloped property which is filled with scrub oaks, manzanita and Ponderosa pines.

Our empty new house, just starting out.

Our empty new house, just starting out, ready to be filled with family antiques and thrift shop and even trash day finds

***

After five years of preparation, we finally were ready to move into a freshly painted and nearly empty house. We had left so much behind, not needing or wanting our old furniture and city things. What I kept? I kept my Grandma?s furniture, a desk, a dresser and a gate-legged table. We had all her many oil paintings, some for every room. I kept Dad?s old office desk and the ash furniture he built for his first new house, a bookcase and the three drawer dresser? he built for us babies. We kept our old comfy couch and loveseat, a nice neutral tan, and an old rattan chair I found in an alley on trash day. I covered the cushions with a serape blanket and there it is in the above photo.? Everything we kept has a story,?a family story.

My List
Since I had shifted my focus to mountain living, I slowly developed a mental list of items and materials, I?d look for at the annual flea market in our county and at junk shops and yard sales. Here?s the list:

Indian blankets found second hand.

Weathered wood
Denim
Leather
Suede
?Plaid shirt? plaid

Summer camp
?40s kitchen
Rusted metal
Barbed wire
Oil cloth
Yosemite slate (Black, brown and gold)
Wildflowers
Graniteware
California-colored pottery

Terracotta clay
Vintage flower pots are an obsession Wrought iron
Granite rock
Pine trees and cones

Copper
Wool Indian blankets
Rope
Galvanized metal
Bronze
Night sky

These were the materials and things I?d search out so I didn?t get everything! I can be a bit of a crow, gathering shiny objects in its nest.

I?d find things, each with a feeling of exhilaration, sometimes with a look over my shoulder to check f someone else was reaching for what I had snatched up! I carefully put all these things away in boxes and bags and into storage until we were ready to move.

My Best Day
One day that December, I sat on the bare patio and unwrapped all my mountain themed treasures. I had forgotten so many of the items that I had found over the five years and opened and lifted out each one, humming.
It was like Christmas for me,?a favorite day.

***

Now, when I return to Fullerton to visit family, I head over to spend an hour or so in my favorite shop from back then. It?s not the same, because back then I had a direction, a goal to acquire what would go into our home and lives.? Now when I go, I rearely find anything I need?it?s just nice to putter and browse. Thank goodness now?I have a feeling that I have enough?.for inside!? Oh, you forgot about the seven acres, huh?

New smell discovered: It's 'olfactory white' as in white noise

New smell discovered: Scientists have created a 'white smell,' a 40-compound blend of scents in the middle of the pleasant-edible scale. The new smell was discovered by scientists in Israel.

By Stephanie Pappas,?LiveScience.com / November 20, 2012

Scientists in Israel have discovered a new smell, the olfactory equivalent of white noise. Here, Caroline De Boutiny, the perfume creator or 'nose' at the Galimard perfume factory in France, holds paper scent testers to smell different essences.

The smell is dubbed "olfactory white," because it is the nasal equivalent of white noise, researchers reported Monday (Nov. 19) in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Just as white noise is a mixture of many different sound frequencies and white light is a mixture of many different wavelengths, olfactory white is a mixture of many different smelly compounds.

In fact, the key to olfactory white is not the compounds themselves, researchers found, but the fact that there are a lot of them.

RECOMMENDED: Are you scientifically literate? Take the quiz

"[T]he more components there were in each of two mixtures, the more similar the smell of those two mixtures became, even though the mixtures had no components in common," they wrote.

White smell

Almost any given smell in the real world comes from a mixture of compounds. Humans are good at telling these mixtures apart (it's hard to mix up the smell of coffee with the smell of roses, for example), but we're bad at picking individual components out of those mixtures. (Quick, sniff your coffee mug and report back all the individual compounds that make that roasted smell. Not so easy, huh?)

Mixing multiple wavelengths that span the human visual range equally makes white light; mixing multiple frequencies that span the range of human hearing equally makes the whooshing hum of white noise. Neurobiologist Noam Sobel from the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel and his colleagues wanted to find out whether a similar phenomenon happens with smelling. [7 New Flavors Your Tongue May Taste]

In a series of experiments, they exposed participants to hundreds of equally mixed smells, some containing as few as one compound and others containing up to 43 components. They first had 56 participants compare mixtures of the same number of compounds with one another. For example, a person might compare a 40-compound mixture with a 40-compound mixture, neither of which had any components in common.

This experiment revealed that the more components in a mixture, the worse participants were at telling them apart. A four-component mixture smells less similar to other four-component mixtures than a 43-component mixture smells to other 43-component mixtures.

Categorizing compounds

The researchers seemed on track to finding the olfactory version of white noise. They set up a new experiment to confirm the find. In this experiment, they first created four 40-component mixtures. Twelve participants were then given one of the mixtures to sniff and told that it was called "Laurax," a made-up word. Three of the participants were told compound 1 was Laurax, three were told it was compound 2, three were told it was compound 3, and the rest were told it was compound 4.?

North Korea possibly preparing long-range missile test-report

TOKYO (Reuters) - North Korea, under heavy U.N. sanctions for its nuclear weapons program, could be preparing a long-range ballistic missile test, a Japanese newspaper said on Friday, citing officials who have seen U.S. intelligence analysis.

The report comes just weeks before South Korea's December 19 presidential election in which how to handle North Korea is a major campaign issue. The isolated North has for years tried to influence major events in the South by waging propaganda or armed attacks.

North and South Korea have been technically at war since their 1950-53 conflict ended in a truce, not a peace treaty, and regional powers have for years been trying to rein in the North's nuclear program.

"The United States has detected moves that are seen as preparation by North Korea for a long-range missile launch, which could take place as early as this month," the Asahi daily said citing unnamed government officials.

The United States traditionally shares such information with its two allies in the region, South Korea and Japan.

North Korea is believed to be developing a long-range ballistic missile with a range of up to 6,700 km (4,200 miles) aimed at hitting the continental United States but the last two rocket test launches failed.

In April, under its new leader Kim Jong-un, North Korea launched a rocket that flew just a few minutes covering a little over 100 km (60 miles) before crashing into the sea between South Korea and China.

North Korea has said the April launch was aimed at putting a scientific satellite into orbit.

Regional powers trying to stop North Korea's arms program believe Pyongyang is using rocket launches to perfect technology to build a missile arsenal capable of delivering a nuclear warhead to the United States.

North Korea is under U.N. sanctions that ban trading in missile or nuclear technology that have driven its already dire economy deeper in trouble but cutting off what was once a lucrative source of hard cash.

An official at South Korea's office of the Joint Chiefs of Staff declined to confirm what movements had been detected at the missile site, Tongchang-ri, on North Korea's west coast near China but said it was monitoring developments.

100-car pileup in Texas fog kills two, hurts dozens

A deadly highway crash involving dozens of cars near Beaumont, Texas, darkened Thanksgiving Day for travelers. NBC's Diana Alvear reports.

By NBC News staff and news services

Updated at 6:50 p.m. ET:?Two people died and scores of people were hurt Thursday when at least 100 vehicles collided in in dense fog Southeast Texas in a pileup that left trucks twisted on top of each other and authorities rushing to pull survivors from the wreckage.

The chain-reaction collision occurred in extremely foggy conditions at about 8:45 a.m. Thanksgiving Day on Interstate 10 southwest of Beaumont, a Gulf Coast city about 80 miles east of Houston.

A man and a woman were killed in a Chevy Suburban SUV crushed by a tractor trailer, the Texas Department of Public Safety told KFDM-TV.

Officials at Acadian Ambulance service said at least 51 people have been taken to area hospitals and at least eight were critically hurt. Ambulances from other services transported other patients.

According to DPS, a crash on the eastbound side of the highway led to other accidents in a dangerous chain reaction. There were multiple crashes on the other side of the highway as well.? ?

"We have 18-wheelers on top of cars, we have cars on top of cars. It's just catastrophic," Jefferson County Sheriff's Office Deputy Rod Carroll told NBC News.

He said 80 to 100 people were transported to hospitals.

KBMT

Some of the vehicles in the pileup on Interstate 10 are seen Thursday.

He told The Associated Press the fog was so thick that deputies didn't immediately realize they were dealing with multiple accidents.?

I-10's eastbound lanes were re-opened Thursday evening after more than eight hours.? ?

Texas Department of Public Safety trooper Stephanie Davis told KFDM that two people in an SUV died after the crash. She said at least 100 cars and trucks were involved in the accident.? ?

Carroll said uninjured drivers tried to help as authorities sorted through the wreckage.? ?

"It's just people helping people," Carroll said. "The foremost thing in this holiday season is how other travelers were helping us when we were overwhelmed, sitting and holding, putting pressure on people that were injured."

The highway had been crowded with motorists traveling during the holiday. Many of the vehicles were moving close to the posted speed of 70 mph despite dense fog that limited visibility, Carroll said.?

KBMT

Some of the injured on Interstate 10 in Texas are treated near the crash scene Thursday.

The Associated Press and Reuters contributed to this report.

Dorchester Victorian mansion is grand | Boston Homes Prime Real ...

Turn-of-the-century Dorchester home boasts five fireplaces, five bedrooms and a billiard room.

Just north of Codman Square and close to Wellesley Park in Dorchester is a majestic single-family home with more than 6,700 square feet of living space.
It would be a perfect home for a growing family or for grand entertaining.
Diane Davidson, Richard Giglio and Jeffrey Keller of Keller Williams Realty have listed this double bowfront home at 18 Melville Ave. at $849,000.
This regal house was built in 1888 for Charles F. Baxter, a civil engineer, but sometime between then and 1915, it was widened. The accompanying stable is long gone, allowing for a nice landscaped yard.
The recessed columned entry with leaded glass sidelights and a wide transom is beneath a portico with two pairs of fluted columns that rise two stories.
The hint of grandeur is confirmed when stepping from the vestibule through another doorway with leaded glass into the open foyer with wide arches supported by columns.
To the left is a spacious living room with a high ceiling, and a large fireplace. That hardwood floor has a mahogany inlay. An alcove in this room opens onto a deck that gives access to the side yard and driveway.
Straight ahead is an elegant staircase with a lovely balustrade. The stairs turn at two landings.
To the right of the foyer is the drawing room or music room. Two sets of French doors with wide transoms open into this room, which has a gleaming hardwood floor with an intricate Greek key mahogany inlay.
Another set of doors opens into a large dining room, featuring a wood-paneled coffered ceiling and a handsome fireplace with an oak mantelpiece and mirrored overmantel. On either side of the fireplace are wide benches.
The paneled wainscot is shoulder-high, interrupted by built-in china cabinets with glass fronts and three windows with a lovely stained glass design and stained glass transom. Toward the back of the house is a hallway/butler?s pantry with more built-ins and a full bath, which features bead board and a pedestal sink.
The hall continues to a huge eat-in kitchen that is striking. In the middle is a six-foot-wide center island at baker?s height, topped with Italian marble.
A long walnut counter provides plenty of workspace in front of two windows, which give views of a spacious deck. Custom-built walnut cabinets enhance the kitchen, and a deep-set Shaw?s farmer?s sink is in front of one of the windows.
A six-burner stainless steel Monogram range with a griddle plays center stage between more marble-topped counters and includes a convenient pot filler and a tiled backsplash.
The breakfast area is completely open to the kitchen and holds a large farmer?s table. Behind the range is a little hall that holds a refrigerator, and between the sink and the stove is a large pantry and access to the big deck.
The fourth side of the kitchen and breakfast area, opposite the stove, has two doors. One opens to the second staircase and the other to another pantry. Next to it is a refrigerator.
Returning to the hallway from the dining room, this area continues to another grand room that is used as a den. It too has a fireplace with an overmantel, like that in the dining room, flanked by wooden benches. The ceiling is wood-paneled, and the paneled wainscoting is waist-high.
An alcove features a long wooden seat that runs the width of this space, and above it are two stained glass windows. Pocket doors open to return to the front parlor.
The main staircase is open to the rooms below, including one wall that features an arch with latticework. The second floor wraps around the staircase, and another arch on the same plane introduces a large room that serves as a library. The light-filled room boasts a five-window bay and a window seat; one of the windows has stained glass.
Three rooms lie at the front of the house. In one bedroom a window seat occupies the space in front of the bow windows. The second room, which is above the foyer, has a ceiling fan and is used as an exercise room.
The largest room with a bow has no window seat but does feature a charming fireplace with a tile surround and wooden mantel. This room has two closets, one of which opens into a third bedroom, the master bedroom, which also has a second closet.
The northwest side of the house also holds a fourth bedroom, which is newly carpeted, and a spacious laundry room, which is actually larger than one of the bedrooms! It holds a side-by-side washer and dryer.
A full bath with a combination tub/shower and a marble-topped Queen Anne vanity is off the hall, which continues toward the rear of the house. Here is the billiard room, a spacious room with two four-window bays with window seats on either side of the room and a splendid fireplace with a mirrored overmantel and a tile surround. A window on either side of the fireplace has a storage seat.
A half bath with a pedestal sink is off the billiard room.
And, there?s more. Another bedroom is on this floor and more closets. Next to one of them in the middle of the house is a staircase that leads to the unfinished attic. Although servants may have lived there decades ago, this area now serves as storage space, with evidence of the original roof of the house, before its expansion.
In addition, a full basement has at least a 7-foot ceiling with a workshop, the mechanicals and plenty of storage space.
